Fess Up -- Who Tans??

I've never been in a tanning bed. I try to always wear sunscreen in the summer and all year I put it on my face. When I was in my teens (I'm 46) I use to lay out all the time and now I wish I would of taken better care of my skin back then.

Okay, excuse me for butting in here and being a Jewish mother again, but please don't do it! My father spent his whole life having things burned off his face and body. Skin cancers caused by the sun. He said if he had known when he was young, he would have stayed away from the sun. Before he died last year, they even found a melanoma, the most serious kind of skin cancer, on his head. He went bald at a young age, and his head was exposed. Sorry to be a party pooper, but you are now forewarned.

i started tanning in beds when i was 16. i have done it one or two weeks every May since to get a base tan. but for the past 4 years i haven't really needed to b/c i spend 3-4 hrs on the mower every weekend from april to nov. gotta love acreage!

i did the spray tan a few times. it cost $90 (it was new then) you have to stand with your legs far apart and your arms out and bent at the elbow with your fingers spread as wide as you can. HOLD YOUR BREATH!!! it tastes terrible and when inhaled is disgusting! the beeper goes off and you turn around real fast in the same position. it lasts about 3-4 days, looks a little orange and if you get in the pool, it comes off and forms a brown film on top of the water. plus while it's hydor-blasting you, it is freezing!!!!! i have never tried at home spray ons, but i am the one that asked cathe about her tan in hc and she said she used the beds at the club a few times and then used este lauder spray on (i think) i'm going to try it. if it doesn't look good at least i can be orange at home! dogs are color blind.

No way.. If i could only take back the time in the sun in my teens :( I was admiring someones skin the other day - like pocelin.. didn't spend much time in the sun..

skin cancer - wrinkles.. just not worth it

I admit that I have in the past, but not for about 5-6 years. I have many moles and am scared to death of melanoma. Also the wrinkle factor. My best friend, who is my age, looks about 5 years older than me because she tans a lot. And she has had a cancerous growth removed from her face!!!! Some people just can't give up that golden glow. In the summer, I use tanning cream on my face and legs and it works just fine.

Y'all HAVE shamed me into it ~ I'm goin' to get sprayed. That jet thing sounds like the thing to have! Sometimes I wish I lived in the Victorian Era when pasty white skin and an extra 10 pounds was considered En Vogue!!!

sarahinva,

Good answer :) . The spray tan I use is the 6 second tan. It dosen't make me orange, its golden brown. My dh really liked it. In fact, the first time I used it, he couldn't tell the difference. Believe me, he was skeptical. You can't go in a swimming pool with it or you might streak because of the chlorine. The cost was 20-24 dollars and it lasted about 4 days before it started to fade. I was dark for about a week. I loofa scrubbed before and moisturized prior to the spray. I justify the cost because it would take me several times to use the bed and the cost would be the same. If you don't continue useing the bed, your tan fades. There are drawbacks to both but I can live with the ones from the spray.

No way!! My Dad was diagnosed with melanomaa 4 years ago and was VERY lucky to escape with just having all the lymph nodes under his right arm removed. I, too, wish I could take back the tans and burns of my youth but I can't. I can make sure I have sunscreen on my face everyday year round and then everywhere else exposed plus face in other seasons (New England native). I can also make sure to teach my kids sun safety as melanoma can run in families. My father's brother died from it. Scary stuff.
