Female Question

Ok, got a question.

If your menstrual cycle is pretty much the same length every month (you start you period within a day or two of the last month) why is it that you can't just add 12-16 days to the start of your period and avoid sex during that time to avoid pg? Ok, lets say even 12-18 days? And then after that go ahead and have unprotected sex? What about if you routinely have pain during ovulation. I get that, not really pain, but a soreness near my ovary at the time of ovulation to where I can tell I am ovulating and so far that is occuring right near (or I guess on,) the day I ovulate. Anyone get that?

If your cycles are TO THE DAY, does anyone just add days and come up with a time period to avoid sex? How did that work for you? (lol, I know the answers I am gonna get on this one)

This might be a stupid question, but I'm putting it out there anyway, especially for those of you who do FAM.

I know I could chart my temp, CM, but can't I just be lazy? lol. What do you all do?

You can, it's just that the rhythm method is something like 80-90% effective, so you have to decide if that's good enough for you. By the way the actual recommendation is to avoid to unprotected sex for 5 days before and after ovulation. This is to account for the how long the swimmers are viable, how long the egg is viable, ovulation being off by a few hours or days each month, etc.

What a pain in the butt! Just get an IUD. They're unfairly maligned, the dangerous one is long off the market, and the ones they have now are great.

Amy,

While I am not actively trying to get PG, I am not actively trying to prevent it either, for the most part...

I have heard an IUD can cause heavier periods and that in now way appeals to me. Plus, now I would want no hormones. I like how I feel sans hormones. I was on the Pill or Depo my whole reproductive life!! Didn't realize what I was talking about was the rhythm method. I'll look it up...;-)

Hi Janice,

There are formulas for calculating your fertile window based on the calendar. You can find them on the internet. Just remember, that every woman will have an irregular cycle with ovulation taking place early or delayed. The calendar method does not account for this.

<By the way the actual recommendation is to avoid to unprotected sex for 5 days before and after ovulation.>

Since sperm may survive for up to 5 days in cervical mucus, it is true that one can conceive from an act of intercourse 5 days before ovulation. However, the recommendation is not to avoid unprotected sex for 5 days after ovulation. The ovum is viable 12-24 hours if fertilization does not occur.

I use a cervical mucus only method. It is easy.

You know you can pm or email with questions or ask right here.

Hi Ann Marie,

The cervical mucus methods or OM (Ovulation Methods) uses the observation of cervical mucus to determine fertility and infertility.
I pm'd you more information. If you haven't received the PM, let me know.

Someone else already covered making sure to account for the 5 days before (and sometimes more) and a day or two after ovulation.

In regards to the cervical mucus just be wary that not everyone produces the kind of cervical mucus that is noticeable outside of the cervix so this isn't always a good way to chart your cycles and predict ovulation. I'm one of those types...there is no way I could predict my cycle based on cervical mucus. Actually I'm one that could probably really only do it by my basal body temperature...I'm pretty irregular. A good book about all of this is "Taking Charge of your Fertility".

I have spent the last several months studying cervical mucus and I disagree that it is not always a good way to chart or predict cycles. I have taught women to id the fertile pattern that seemed pretty vague but I don't know your specific pattern and couldn't advise without reviewing the charted observations. Without cervical mucus, pregnancy is difficult to achieve though not impossible. Some women with seemingly dry cycles do have a change in their observations, but the person observing has to be taught how to do this. Plus, the lack of mucus for external observations may indicate an underlying condition.

The external observation for identifying the fertile and infertile period is well-researched and those studies are published. I think it is important to keep in mind that the terminology used in various OM plays a role. The method I use has very specific criteria and can be individualized for women who have dry cycle or continuous mucus.

A OM can be used by women with irregular cycles, regualr cycles, premenopause, PCOS, breastfeeding, etc. There is no contraindication.

I will pm the information to you Angela.

Yes, and don't let the association with the Catholic Church turn you off. I haven't shared specifics on the OM I use or the organizations teaching OM because I really am not up to Catholic bashing. The OM I use is without a doubt the result of a physician's Catholic faith, but Catholic theology is not part of teaching/learning the method (I can't speak for the other organizations that teach OM though but I will add this to my to-do list:)). I know people may be reluctant to pursue these OM because of this (couples have told me they were reluctant to learn the method I teach because of this). Please don't let that keep you from learning an OM if you are interested.

You are welcome! You know which site I am partial to.;)

Oh, I think the DaVinci Code has be bashed out plus I am PMSing. :) There are only so many hours in a day that I can pray the rosary for people. :) HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After I went off the pill due to migraines, I used what you are describing to not get pregnant we used condoms during the "ify" days and nothing on the we are postive I can't get pg days. We did this for 1 year and 4 months before we 'accidently' got pregnant so I think we did fairly well. (we had started talking about having a family it just happened sooner than we expected and we were using a condom at the time) The others are right though Rhythm method is taught and you can do it if you are regular and want to take the time to chart all the numbers. I did not chart temps. only did the counting thing and it worked for us.
