feeling overwhelmed

Cathlete
I was really excited about getting my STS Strength, just ordered Monday. And now I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the equipment you need. I just own a bench with 8 risers and I'm purchasing the slanted risers but I cannot get a valor stand and it seems alot of other equipment. I'm wondering if I will see the same results. Thanks, Lori

Don't worry about it. I don't have a stand either and have been getting thru with no problem. Relax and enjoy the anticipation.

I use my stability ball for the incline work - the only other equipment I use:step, weights, bands, and paper plates. You do not need all the equipment shown.

Hi Lori,

I think you will have plenty - I don't own the stand and do not intend to buy one due to the prices.

You need a stability ball and resistance bands and the high step.

That should be it.

I just bought the equipment as I could afford it.

I also use a stability ball instead of the slanted risers, and tubing instead of a pull-up bar. Like you, I am trying to do this without spending a lot of extra money. The few things I did buy for STS that I love are weighted gloves (my gloves add 1.5# per hand and were less than $10 at Walmart) and a weighted vest (10# vest was $20 at Big 5 Sporting Goods) . The vest has been really useful in M2 to help me go heavier without needing to buy a squat rack. So I feel like I get all the benefits of the program (or at least as much as would matter to me, since I am not training for a competition) for under $30 of equipment.

Don't worry about the stands, there are actually only 2 chest exercises to use them for, chest presses and incline chest presses. You can also use them with a bar to sub pull ups, but the tubing works fine. I bought safety stands (the Valor has been out of stock) and because my barbell is short and my bench too high, I can't even use them for incline work. Anyway, you may just need to lighten your barbell a few pounds for flat and incline presses, but you will still get great results, it's only 2 of the exercises in the chest discs anyway. And in meso 3 you can do the plyo leg workouts so you won't even need squat stands or a weighted vest.

I will say the following are really necessary, at least for meso 1 and 2, I have not looked at 3 yet (I like to be surprised ;))
Resistance band - this is a must, but you can buy 1 in a sporting goods store for around $12, you can use any brand, just make sure it's at least 6 ft. long, the shorter ones, I've heard, end up being difficult if not impossible to use for many exercises.

Burst resistant stability ball - Cathe's are $23, I know Amazon has other brands so you can get free shipping on them. But they are all generally around $18-23. Make sure to get one that is "burst resistant".

Tubing with over the door attachment - About $15, Cathe's come with the over the door attachment. I don't know of others that do. This would be used to substitute pull ups if you don't have a pull up bar.

You have a step, so I don't believe you have to have the mini step too.

I'm assuming you have dumbbells, maybe barbells. If you don't have barbells, I've heard you can just use your dumbbells instead.

Soooo, with all that said, you are gonna love STS, don't worry about the small stuff, it's a great program, and a couple of tweaks won't change that. Let us know how you like it when you start! :D

Thanks Dela, I glad you mentioned the resistance band, I have the one 6ft. green one that she uses in her other workouts. butts and gutts, etc. I noticed when listening to her on Cathe Tv she mentioned a different band the cathe fitness have. She must be out of those. Do you know what one she is talking about and why to get it? Thanks, Lori

There is a Cathe band set of 3 resistance bands (I have them), they use the green one in the dvds, which I think are out of stock, but I remember a couple of recent posts where people are finding some of the out of stock cathe items, I want to say Scheels sporting goods, I just went to their site, or tried to, but it's down right now. And I googled and found them here, but I've never ordered from this site either:

They run about $25 for all 3, and they are not sold separately. But I'm certain the one you have will work just fine.

Dela, I have the green med.tension, purple heavy tension, but don't have the silver. she said in these workouts the resistance band is a different one from her previous workouts.

I think the only real difference is that she is using her latex green band instead of the other brand green band. I haven't seen her use a different color other than the green one. Hers do have more resistance, but if you have already have a green band, that one will work for you until you are ready to purchase another one. Just hold it where you get the most tension and you should be fine.

When the weight for the barbell presses got heavier in MS 2, I got my husband to hand me the barbell and take it from me for the breaks.

Your purple heavy tension band might be closer to the newer green non-latex bands. I found the new Cathe bands to be really tough. As the above poster said, I too really think you'll be fine with the ones you have, you certainly do not have to use the Cathe brand.

I found a set of 3 non-latex bands on ebay for 10.00. I think I will purchase them since they probably do make a difference from the green latex one I have.

I did that yesterday for M2 W3 barbell chest work. The DH is not always available (or willing to get up early) to help me when I'm working out and I know not everyone has that option. Luckily I was able to move my workout to Sunday morning to fit both our schedules. Just something to think about if you have that option.

Like others said you only need a tower, or stand for a couple exercises and it's only once per week so you should be fine. Just make sure you're safe when you select your weights if you don't have a tower, squat rack, or spotter. You can always use less weight and do more reps.

Oh and the best part of having DH spot me was hearing how surprised he was at the weight I was using. "How heavy is this thing???" and when I went up for the next set "You're going heavier now?"

I am so glad to hear that someone else uses their ball for incline work! Makes me feel not so alone. LOL.
