feeling guilty

Hi guys. For a while I have noticed a loss of interest in weight training. So for the past month I haven't done any (except for yesterday) I just got sick of feeling tight and sore. I used to love DOMS but as i have gotten older i hate it. I've fallen in love with vinyasa yoga, especially shiva rae. So the only things I have been doing for the past month are her workouts and some cardio. I'm even slowly phasing cardio out and noticed that i'm practicing yoga more and more and i'm finding my body is craving it. I would much rather do 90 minutes of vinyasa yoga then even an hour of cardio or weights anymore. I feel guilty not lifting weights because i know how important it is but I don't want to do things I don't enjoy anymore. I lifted yesterday (muscle max) I felt like crap all day and today I can barely walk. Now I know that a lot of the soreness is the result of not lifting for a while but i want my workouts to make me feel good and it seems like yoga is the only thing that is doing that. Have any of you ever felt like this or done this (given up a particular type of workout).

Sure! Many times! It's normal to get burned out on a type of workout, or instructor, etc...
And if your body isn't responding in a way that feels good to you anymore, then it's time for a change. You should feel energized and happy after your workout, and if yoga is doing that for you right now, then keep doing it!
Maybe you'll come back to cardio and weights after awhile, maybe you won't. Your body chemistry changes, and of course, things gets "creakier" as we all age. Go with what makes you feel good and refreshed.
I quit TaeBo a couple of years ago after doing ONLY TaeBo for 5 yrs. Seriously, that's all I did. And then I hit the wall where I couldn't get myself to do it anymore. I just didn't feel it. That's how I found Cathe. I've since picked it back up and do it occasionally - I still prefer that to any other kickboxing workout - but I go with how I feel. Don't feel guilty. You're responding to your body. That's what you SHOULD be doing! :)

Hi Karie,

I wonder if your body is also responding to the soothing aspect of yoga which reduces stress (and cortisol production.) Yoga really creates a stronger mind/body link that puts you more in tune overall. There's a reason Tony Horton never misses his yoga workouts! Plus, I've seen plenty of yoga practitioners w/ outstanding strength & muscle definition so I wouldn't worry that you're not doing traditional weight training!

Do what feels good for your body (and your mind!) and don't worry about what you're missing.

As an aside, most people go thru phases w/ their workouts. I think I've done 2 step workouts in the past year and I don't miss them a bit. (I used to do them 3x/week!) Now, I prefer drill type cardio workouts that don't require any mental effort, just lots of oxygen!! I suspect it's because I have too much going on in my life so my brain doesn't want to waste neuron energy on remembering & following complex cardio routines. That may change over time, but for now I'm doing what feels right. :)

HTH!

Step, hi impact cardio and weight training are rapidly becoming history for me. I have been doing mostly pilates/yoga/barre/dance fusion type workouts and loving it. I recently discovered All the Right Moves with Grace Lazenby and have been enjoying those. Cardio has been mainly walking. I like feeling toned and stretched at the same time. Occasionally I will do a weight workout mainly Cathe's Pyramid full body bonus one. I have not gained one lb. and all my clothes fit better. Sometimes you just have to change it up and really I refuse to feel guilty!

I enjoy weight training for now, but I can see myself eventually shifting to Pilates and Barre type workouts. I will trade in my squat rack for a reformer. ;)

I think you should do what makes you feel good and not feel guilty about it.

Thank you all for the responses. Its like my mind battles my body at times. My mind says, "push your limits with sprints and lifting heavy" and my body says "do yoga, calm your mind and lenghten your muscles". Sometimes I have a hard time listening to my body but I need to embrace it. Its weird because I used to be so into weights but it was like a switch turned off and I can't even think about lifting. I do like the occational barre workout. I'm really looking forward to new P57 workouts. At least i'm not alone:) Thanks again ladies.

I too was so into weight training that I could not imagine not doing those types of workouts. I used to think I would be 90 and still lifting weights. Not so any more. I may go back to it--I am thinking about another way to use STS--but right now it is like a switch turned off. I don't want to get out those weights especially that barbell that I was so attached to. I am enjoying body weight work and lots of stretching. Go with what you will actually do. Look at how fit all those yogis are! Have you ever seen Iyengar? He looks amazing.
