Fed Up with Knee Injury

Hello All

Two weeks ago I somehow managed to injure my left knee. I noticed that it started to swell up slightly and there is a dull ache running up the inside of my thigh. I have tried resting it over the past week. I think I must have done it doing lunges, during one of the lower body workouts. My form must have been out somewhere.

Anyway I'm feeling very low at the moment I hate not exercising. I love to exercise for my mental well being if nothing else. Swimming just doesn't do it for me. I love my Cathe workouts. Strangely step aerobics doesn't seem to be too bad as long as I dont put too much weight on it. But I think lower body weights at the moment are a complete no no.

I'm just curious do you think I will lose all my hard earned work by just incorporating upper body excercise, light cardio and lower body floor exercises? I'm desperate to do something. I know I shoud rest and I am doing alot of that. But the thought of doing nothing is really getting me down. I'm back to the doctors on Wednesday to get a check up. But my GP isn't very knowledgeable about sport injury. He just says rest it.

Any advice?
Thanks
Laura

My advice is to see a sports medicine doctor or orthopedist (sometimes the same thing). Knee injuries can take a very long time to heal, so be patient. You're better off getting a little out of shape and letting the knee completely heal, instead of pushing it and possibly damaging it permanently.

And if you can't put your full weight on it while doing step aerobics, then don't do step! If your balance is off, then your form is off, and you could be setting yourself up for another injury.

Take care of yourself!

Laura,

I'm not writing to pepper you with advice, but I wanted to let you know that I understand comPLETELY how you feel. I'm dealing with an injury to my left ankle and right now I can't even get into see anyone - I tried to get ultrasound for the area and I'm catching guff from my chiropractor...everyone wants a full body assessment done and I don't need that. I think I've been wearing wrong shoes or something because this is a new pain and the shoes I was wearing when running are new too. I want to run because the weather is nice and this time of year I usually run several times a week and right now I can't even walk. I go to a local park and it's so gorgeous there...I can't bring myself to even go there right now because it's so discouraging.

I feel soooo frustrated because I want to work out and I can't run...I haven't tried lifting alot because I'm fearful of making it worse. The doc has ruled out a stress fracture and thinks it's tendonitis. I completely relate though about feeling down because you can't workout...it's so much more than a calorie burner, or for physical health...it burns off so much tension for me and keeps me feeling "happy" ...without it I just feel lifeless. I actually think I've developed an ulcer over the past month because I haven't been able to get rid of the stress I've been hanging onto...when it rains it pours, eh?

You are not alone...does that make you feel better...(haha):7
I hope you feel better soon - I don't think you'll lose much endurance or fitness in the time it will take for your area to heal though. Keep your chin up and I'll try to do the same...haha

I agree with Shannon. When you go to your GP get a referal to an orthopedic doctor. I know how it feels to not be working out like you are used to. I have been dealing with knee issues for a little under a year and after surgery am finally getting back into semi-intense activities. It really stinks, but just listen to your body right now so that you don't injure yourself further.

I completly know how you feel. I injured my right knee on 6/22 and it has been killing me not to do any cardio or LBWO.

I finally went to the Orthopedic today, (Had X-Ray completed on 6/29)..
Here is the verdict;
.... Osteoarthritis Knee Pain (Knee joint is gradually deteriorating)... They put me on a prescription for 2-weeks, (twice a day, and ice at night)...Will be getting injections (Euflexxa) within a few weeks. It's a series of shots (liquid shot behind the kneecap)...after that it will be when needed. Needless to say, NO SQUATS,NO LUNGES...Be extra careful w/ the StepUps, step workouts...She recommend to do, Biking, swimming, Elliptical on low setting, walking... I can do Leg Press, but no locking my knees out, floor work...(this is where I will get the majority of my LBWO in...

This really, really stinks...I so know how you feel.
Listen to your body right now, I tried to push myself and do cardio and it just made the pain worse afterwards. Have you had X-Rays done?

Sorry for the long post;

Hello

Thanks to you all for replying. No I haven't had an xray yet, but I think it might be in the pipeline. I am also concerned about osteo-arthritus. My father had it and so did my paternal grandmother, so it is in the family.

I think its just the stress release that exercise provides that I really miss. I am by no means lean but I really don't want to put on weight. However, I know I must listen to my body and take care of it. Its just very frustrating when watching Cathe's new blogs and really getting excited about the new series.

Like you Jennifer I think lunges are completely out of the question. I feel no discomfort going up stairs but going down seems to be painful.

Thank you all for your replies and my thoughts are with you all who are also nursing an injury at the moment.

Take care you're a great bunch.
