Favorite Children's Book-revisited

I dont have any children, but my SIL is a childrens librarian. She occasionally brings me some noteworthy teen books to read. My all-time favorite that I could not put down was Catherine called Birdy. It takes place in Medievel Europe. I missed a half day at work because I couldnt put it down.

I grew up with 2 books that were just plain cool, odd but memorable nonetheless.
1. Never Taese a Weasel
2. Uncle Shelby's ABZ by Shel Siverstein (which is not necessarily a kids book, but I absolutely LOVED it as a kid).

What is your favorite books? ANy odd, obscure favorites?
 
I still remember my childhood books! I remember Charlotte's Web, Superfudge & anything by Beverly Cleary. Also, I have a place in my heart just for nursery rhymes.

I loved Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz. I read the kid's versions when I was about 5 and the original versions when I was about 8.

I also loved Dr. Seuss a lot, especially "Are You My Mother?" I don't know why, but I remember always going to that one in our kindergarten classroom.

I have a wonderful collection of Aesop's Fables and Grimm's Fairy Tales in a hardbound book with fabulous line art, a gift to me by my father when I was 10.

I also loved this illustrated children's dictionary that my mom gave me one Christmas. (I was 4.) It was about 500 pages. It took me a few months to read it from cover to cover. That book is yellowed and quite worn now, but it's still in the house where I grew up.

I guess it would depend on the age group. I homeschool and use a literature based curriculum so I have literally hundreds of 'favorites'....sad but true.

I still cry every time I read "Where the Red Fern Grows".

"Gone Away Lake" is just the sweetest little book that both my boys and my daughter loved.

All of Judy Blume's books

I loved the Trixie Beldon series when I was younger.

I still love Green Eggs and Ham (favorite Dr. Seuss)!

10. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever--so sweet and hysterically funny the we read it every year at Christmastime

12. Animals should definately not wear clothes
13. Elizabeth George Speare's books--The Witch on Blackbird Pond, The Bronze Bow, the Sign of the Beaver (except Calico Captive, which I did not like)
14. The Chronicles of Narnia

I could go on and on and on....we read aloud a lot in our family!

When I was young, I love the Little House on the Prairie books, Nancy Drew, and anything and everything by Judy Blume. My oldest is loving the "Traveling Pants" series and my youngest is into the "Unfortunate Events" series.

I also remember, "Are there God? It's me, Margaret." It's by Judy Blume. She was awesome! "I must, I must, I must increase my bust."

Oh, The Secret Garden, definitely! That's the one that stands out from my childhood. I loved that book so much! It was magic. I read it every spring from the time I was nine years old until my late twenties. I still read it aloud every once in a while to my fifth graders (always in the spring).

One of our favorites when my son was a baby: We loved, loved, loved the nearly wordless Good Dog, Carl books. We spent hours poring over the pictures, finding new details we'd missed before, laughing at that silly dog and that ornery baby, and making up our own dialogue. Lovely books!

My favorites:
Very young children: Goodnight Moon
Young children: Where the Wild Things Are
Children's: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (actually the whole series is wonderful), Harry Potter (I'm reading this series with my 7 year old boy and while I've enjoyed them, each book is getting longer and longer. We just started the 4th year which is over 700 pages and I'm beginning to dread the next one. Uh-Oh.)

Books my children loved (so far): Daughter, age 9: Little Women, The Secret Garden, Dominic, The Wizard of Oz, Misty of Chincoteague, books by Beverly Clearly.

Son, age 7: Peter Pan, Treasure Island, Harry Potter, Narnia books, Tom Sawyer.

I got them a book of Greek myths, but it was unabridged and definately not for children! The whole bit about the poisoned wedding clothes at the end of Hercules' story was a bit much for them (it was the first one we tried reading due to their familiarity with the Disney movie). I'll have to look for a more age appropriate book, since I loved reading them when I was a child.

I remember reading Judy Blume & Nancy Drew books growing up. My mom used to take us to the library a lot. I love to read. My son also loves when I read to him. The ones we read consistently are:
The Pokey Little Puppy
The Grinch (almost anything by Dr. Suess)
Are You My Mother?

He loves a book called "Monster Mamma" that his preschool teacher reads but when I went to the bookstore I was told that it was out of print. His teacher said she found an extra copy so hopefully she will give it to him. Friday is his last day.
 
I love "In the Hush of the Evening". It's a great book to read your children at night. I would say it's good for kids 3-8. Very calming and poetic. I checked it out from the library, we loved it so much I bought a copy.

I have a favorite for smaller kids. It's called "Stand Back Said the Elephant I'm Going to Sneeze!" and it's a ton of fun. The elephant eventually sneezes and everything turns inside out.

Amazon has it listed as for children 4-8 but I'd still read it and laugh. I'm 28.

My mom has hundreds of children's books. Waiting for my sister and I to have kids, I guess!
 
Goodnight Moon was my absolute favorite for my Mom to read to me before bed. Then as I got older I loved the Beverly Cleary books.
 
2 very yound child books that I remeber well and loved (still love!) were A Fish Out of Water and Go Dog Go!!

My best friend (who has been my best friend since we were 3) gave me those 2 books for Christmas last year!!
