Fat Loss vs Muscle gain

Which is happening to me? I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I'm learning.

I've been working out pretty consistently but stepped it up in the last month. I added more cardio, mixed up the moderate to heavy weight work, and cleaned up the eating. My weight went from 130 to 126. Waist and hip area of some pants are little big/baggy. In some cases I've gone from size 10 or 8 pant to size 6 pants but it depends on the pant style. Belly area is getting flatter but I still have long way to go.

I assumed when the scale went to 126 it was body fat that I lost. But how can I tell whether I gained muscle? I actually thought the scale would go up.

This is such an educated group on these forums, I figured I'd come to you first. Thank you .
Carmen.

It depends on your hormonal profile. I put on muscle easily because I have a higher testosterone level than 80% of the female population. Unfortunately, I also put on fat too. Bummer  Anyway, I would suggest that it appears that you may have done a bit of both. I think you probably put on about a pound of muscle and maybe lost about 5 pounds of body fat. If the scale is heading downward then you are probably losing fat if you are doing any kind of muscle work and eating enough protein. Just my 2c.

This is precisely how lifting weights affects me. I get leaner and lose weight around my midsection. What is nice-- after several months of really pushing yourself with weights you will actually see gains in muscle all over your body.
