Fasting?

I know this may sound out of context here, but has anyone tried fasting as a way of detoxifying and cleansing your body? I recently read a health newletter about this and was wondering if anyone has done this before?

I've done it before. I don't know if I am detoxifying or "cleansing" (I hate that word, it's so cutesy! Either it's cleaning or it's washing, but cleansing is too dainty for me.) but it was an interesting experiment.

I have fasted 3 days on just water, done the Bevery Hills Diet in the 80s for 6 weeks, which has 10 days of just fruit I think, and done juice fasting and all day watermelon fasting.

It feels kinda interesting. It is something of an altered state, especially after day one of the water only. Your brain needs glucose the most, so it gets a bit odd when you don't eat any.

I do it once in awhile for a day or so just to jolt my system, but I don't want to harm my fitness level, so I don't do the longer ones anymore. I believe it can't hurt and if it helps, then wonderful.

I'd be afraid to try, especially if I plan on working out. My body needs fuel if I am to function in any capacity. If I go too long without something, my brain goes "bye bye", my vision starts to get weird, I get the cold sweats, and turn into a total loony. I know everyone is different (and I have hypoglycemic tendencies, obviously) but I would check with a doc first before trying this. It could be dangerous.

As mogambo mentioned, your brain needs glucose to function properly. Fasting can be very dangerous, as I am sure you know. If your goal is to detox your system, my suggestion is to drink plenty of water and eat tons of fruits & veggies for a few days. It seems like a safer option than just water or juice alone. Just my personal beliefs though. Again, borrowing from mogambo, if it works for you, great. If it makes you feel weak or sick, ditch it.
