Fast Metabolism Diet, anyone?

My husband was recently told by his MD to lose some weight. His blood pressure is high too. So of course my hubby looks to me to fix it!! He is a builder and has a very physical job so for him to start working out....not happening. Anyway, a friend of mine got this book by Hailey Pomroy called "Fast Metabolism Diet". She has already lost around 20lbs. I got the book and it's really interesting because the author goes into WHY certain foods should be avoided or consumed in large amounts, when you should eat certain foods and why. I read the entire book and it's really about clean eating. I found it informative! The recipes have been pretty decent too. I'm hoping it will make my own GI system not so angry w/ me all the time!

Has anyone else tried this? Thoughts? Experience?

I have not, but it sounds similar to the Certification I am doing right now through the Metabolic Effect Clinic. Food sends off a hormone response in your body, it truly is not about calories as much as people think, there is a whole hormone effect that will either cause you to burn fat or store fat.. Certain combinations like carbs with fat (think pasta with cheese or cream sauce) is a huge factor that causes an explosion of hormone release like insulin and GIP, which store fat. Not to mention, that combination, carbs especially with saturated fat are linked to heart disease, cancer and other issues.. and you are right about the timing as well.... you are totally on the right track!!!!

I just recently started reading more about the Metabolic Effect and plan on continuing to educate myself.

Dawn - The Metabolic Effect Clinic that your going through for you certification is that with Dr. Jade?

Yes!! He is so awesome! I've done a few of their programs prior to deciding to jump in and do the Cert. It's good stuff!

I'm a registered nurse so I really appreciate the science that she talks about. I've been on a journey of sorts to try to heal myself through nutrition. It makes perfect sense. For every action there is an equal reaction. Remember that from science class? I just need to figure out how to adjust my shopping habits, cooking skills and eating times. I have noticed that I don't feel so bloated after eating but I'm tired. I suppose my body is adjusting right now. Very interesting. Maybe I should start taking classes too! Thanks for the input.

I started following (loosely sometimes) the old Traditional Chinese Medicine seasonal/temperature etc. eating habits when I was having GI & unintentional weight loss/muscle atrophy issues about 13 years back & it too, emphasizes proper foods combining and eating for healing, which once you start on it is easy to keep up with I find. I've never clicked with any "plans" that restrict or reduce food or view food as the enemy (I LOVE cooking) so it made a lot of sense to me. It is also old, old science which just appeals to me in that I am a bit of a history and biology nerd. lol.
Happy to hear that your aren't as bloated anymore. I had to try to help my hubby to not drink water with or too much before his meal and that put an end to his (extreme) bloating with meals. This was something I picked up with the whole TCM eating/nutritional habits I read about. Seems obvious to me now, lol. Just don't fill your belly with water so the minerals from your food can be absorbed slowly and properly.

I hope this works out well for your hubby. I know he doesn't want to do any structured workouts, but if you could get him walking I think it would be good. Most folks I know (in my family where they love salt too much) have lowered their blood pressure just by doing moderate walking almost daily.

Increasing my omega 3 ratio brought down my blood pressure. Krill oil is expensive but it does work. He should not have it if he is allergic to anything from the ocean, like fish or shellfish.

Elsie, thanks for the info but I thought you SHOULD drink water before meals.....is that just for dieting? To make you feel fuller? This is why I should take classes or something. I too don't want food to become the enemy. I just want to make peace with it and my GI system PLUS allow hubby to lose a few pounds. Your eating habits sound healthy and that's my goal. I appreciate the input.

Dawn - which certification are you going through with the ME Clinic?

I didn't know until last year that you shouldn't drink water with your meals. For the most part I do pretty good but there are times I drink a little. The other thing with water I'm somewhat confused on is I recall reading drinking cold water helps boost your metabolism because you're body is working harder to warm it up to body temp (or something like that). Then over a year ago a holistic practitioner told me its not good to drink cold water that it should be more like room temperature. I don't recall the logic behind it though. I actually can't drink cold water anymore. I drink mine at room temp. If anyone has info on the water temp thing, I'd be curious.

I think it has something to do with ice-cold water damaging your stomach lining? I don't know if that's true, though.

Interesting about the not drinking water during meals. I don't drink anything with my meals and I stopped that years ago. I'm not sure why, though. I just stopped.

They have a 3 tier/level nutrition certification program that delves deep into hormones, level one talks about the unique hormonal effects of food, talks heavily about the hormones and what they do, how they are produced, what signals to the body they give etc, level 2 is heavier in the science of fat loss and endrocrinology and level 3 teaches more client specific stuff, with meal plans, assessments etc. They also cover several different protocols, like a gut restoration, thyroid health, adrenal issues, etc.. really good stuff.

In the first section he already said that you can drink water with meals.. I was avoiding too much water during meals, figuring I needed to let my stomach do all the work. I will still stick to that, I don't like to have too much with a meal and sometimes I do apple cider vinegar and water before meals.. As far as the warm water, I've heard that is less shocking to the digestive system.

Funny, we've all heard the same things. .first it's drink a big glass of cold water to help metabolism, now drink warm it's better for digestion... no wonder people are confused!!!

I have to say.....after just 1 week of eating very clean on this "fast metabolism diet", I've lost some water weight. I tried to drink as much as I could without floating away on the bloat barge.....and it seemed to flush me. I felt lighter in a way. I belive in the science of this plan because what we eat does make a difference in how we feel. I'm not saying it's for everyone but it has made me feel a bit better so far and that's my goal. My husband is not starving which surprised him! The plan has you eating every 3-4 hours, specific things like veggies, protien, fruit etc. He's been great so far. I think getting a certification in this field is a smart endeavor! Good for you Dawn!

Dawn, that sounds like a really good certification. I will definitely be looking into that. I agree that with all the information out there and people have their own takes on things, it is no wonder people get confused. Good Luck with certification.

TLC - glad you are noticing a difference with this and your DH. Keep up the good work. As long as this plan is working for you guys that's all that matters.

Tlc93, good luck to you and your husband, with the fast metabolism diet. Dawn9222, I just bought the Lose Weight Here book you recommended a few weeks ago. It has great information in it. I can't get past the fact I don't need to push hard with workouts every day.
tlc93-I can't wait to hear how you and your husband continue to do on the diet.

Dawn, is this one of the authors from "The Metabolic Effect" book? How lucky are you to be taking classes w/ the authors!!!! Have you read this book? It seems similar to the info given in the "Fast metabolism" book. However when reading about the "Metabolic Effect", it seems they delve deeper into body types and what to do (eat and exercise) for YOUR specific type. Is that true? I'm starting to think I should get this book too.

Hi Peg!! Yes, the cert is by Dr. Jade, it is on line. It is not inter-active, however. But, if you go to their site, he has weekly blogs and podcasts too with tons of information. He is AWESOME!! I originally found them years ago doing a search on hormones and training after I saw some stuff by John Romanello. I then signed up and did a Female 8 week fat loss program based on the book. I do have both of their books (he and his brother). And.. You care correct about how they work at finding what works on an individual basis. They have several assessments in the book as well that will help you determine which protocol to start with and tips on how to tweak from there, it really teaches you how to hone in to your own body and how food affects you. Basically talking about getting Hunger, Energy and Cravings under control as a balancing system. The cert digs deep into brain neurotransmitters and hormones.. all the signals that are going on in our bodies and what food does to those signals.

Have read his thread with interest - I've read the teta brothers' books and like a lot of the stuff they say. Dawn- keep telling us about what you learn!

I just want to mention Jade's wife, Jill Coleman. She's amazing. Well worth looking at her website. Also the metabolic workout videos (free) are great. Exhausting and effective.

Jilll Coleman's site is awesome too, she has done women's retreats with Jen Sinkler and Neghar Fonooni that I heard were really good.
