Explain Jabs and hooks?

Can anyone explain the difference between the jabs and the hooks for arms (CTX Kickbox). I am having trouble with the difference.....thank you

I'm going to say with a jab, it's a more forward punch, whereas a hook is alot more upward. You're totally bring your arm up to do a hook.

Also with the jab you want to bring your arm back to your body (guard position I think), and if I'm right, with the hook, that isn't quite as necessary.

I am NO expert either, so please correct me if I am wrong. I've only done the KB tapes 2x, and that's my take on the difference.

It amazes me the power you can really give a punch though:)

When doing a jab, you punch toward the front of whatever object you are punching and quickly retract your arm back into gaurd - as Kathy explained above.

*As a side note, with any punch you should always get your arms back into gaurd as quickly as possible to protect your face/head.*

With a hook, the focus of power would be to the side of someone's head. Bring your arm around rather than up (upward would be an upper-cut) and stop the punch when your hand has come halfway, or just past halfway around. Imagine jacking someone in the side of their head or face (for lack of a better example, I'm really not a violent person!) with a hook, whereas you would punch them in the jaw or nose with a jab... hopefully I'm making some sense. I'm no expert either but I did take a couple years of Tang Soo Do and we did learn hooks, uppercuts and jabs in addition to others.

Good explanation!! I guess I got hook & upper cut mixed up.

From now on, I'm gonna envision punching someone in the nose/jaw or the side of the face with a hook!

I think that makes sense.
:)
