Experience with Moving Companies

I am trying to find a moving company that goes state to state and isn't too expensive. I just have a one bedroom apartment so I don't have loads of stuff. I have two quotes where there is a $1,000 difference, but then I am thinking how do you know you can trust the cheaper one. Anyone with experience, please share.

Thanks.

We used ABF last time we moved. This is a pretty cheap option if you can do the load/unload yourself. They drop off the back of a truck for a day and you load it, then they come pick it up and drive it to your destination. When it arives, they drop it off again for you to unload. We saved about $2000 doing this way.

I have also used United where we boxed up all our stuff, but they did the packing into and out of the truck. This was a bit more expensive though.

Hi there!

We used Mayflower when we moved from Pittsburgh to Rochester, MN. The truck drivers were great and the Pgh movers were great. But, the movers in Rochester unloaded a lot of our stuff in the garage, said that they were going to take a lunch break and never came back. The truck drivers prepaid them (because they had to leave for another job) so they really had no reason to come back. The Rochester movers were also supposed to put back the furniture that was disassembled in Pittsburgh. We complained to Mayflower and they reimbused us an amount they deemed equal to the labor it would have taken to finish the job.

If I weren't pregnant and had 2 children, I probably would have done the ABF You Pack We Haul service. I have to admit, I loved not having to lift a finger during our move. (We packed our stuff, though.) It's amazing how professional movers pack their truck. I thought we had a lot of stuff, but the movers made it look like we had nothing because they packed everything so tight.

My sister recently used North American on a cross country move. It was incredibly expensive, but they were the lowest quote she got. I think the cost was in the $15,000 range. She had a huge household of goods though. The weight was around 21,000 lbs.

She had no complaints with them. I was with her for the move and was very impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the movers themselves, as well as how well they packed and wrapped everything. All of her furniture was wrapped in these huge padded quilts and then shrink wrapped over that, before it went on the truck.

Now that she has unpacked, she hasn't found anything broken. I think that's pretty amazing!

ETA: Her price included the movers packing everything, but not unpacking.

I have often heard with movers, you get what you pay for. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but from my research when we moved, not many, just make sure you go with a reputable and larger company, and check out their rating on the Better Business site, you can review all the complaints about a company there. www.bbb.org. There are a lot of bad stories about smaller no name companies holding your contents hostage until you pay more and fun stuff like that.

I payed about $5000 total, 11,000 pounds, but we also had to move into storage, so I'm probably including the monthly charge in that figure above, then months later moved into the new house, so it was effectively 2 moves because the contents were unloaded into storage. If we had been able to go straight into the new house, it would have been closer to $2500. This was an in state move. The service of the company and crew were excellent, Bohren's was the company, not sure if they are only based in NJ though, they had an A or A+ rating on bbb.org.

Notice this original question was posted over 6 years ago. It looks like someone came on as an advertiser yesterday to post a reply with the name of their moving company, bumping it up to the top of the forum. But I'm betting the original poster has moved already. ;)

OMG!! No I did not notice that! That's actually pretty funny.

My good moving experience

I moved into a one bedroom apartment earlier this year & had a very good experience with 2 Men & A Truck. I'd moved years before with a local outfit & had a bad experience. You can't always go with the best deal.
