Exercise while almost sick?

Bunbun

I've seen posts here before about exercising while you're sick (ok if the symptoms are at neck level and above, no fever...). I'm curious about what folks here do when they first feel symptoms coming on? In the past, I've pushed through it and exercised anyhow, figuring that it might help me feel better, or because I can't tell if it's an allergy or a cold until I'm really sick. (And I get lots of allergies and constantly think I'm coming down with something.) Last time I decided not to workout and came down with bronchitis, anyhow, which I hadn't had in 15 years. x( Now I'm in the "I might be sick/I might have really strange allergies" stage again, and am trying to figure it out--apparently I have really bad judgement about it. How does everyone else decide these things?

Whenever I feel "it" coming on, I go for a walk or do some kind of light, low intensity aerobic activity or yoga. I wouldn't ever do a workout that I normally do. This usually makes me feel a lot stronger, I am not really sure why it works or the science behind it, but I do recover quicker and don't feel as yucky. If I feel a little sick, but can still move around, same thing. If I can't move, I don't do anything.

Good luck!

I always take a garlic pill and cold eez is some good stuff too. I swear by the both of these as they seem to "kill" the cold if you keep taking the both. Just my own personal experience here.
Drink some green tea too. Don't push yourself with workouts. Listen to your body and make your determination.

I usually take it down a peg w/both cardio & strength training. Always when I pushed it too hard, I would definitely have a sinus infection. Stay away from dairy & sugar to staff off any phlegm. Keep drinking either white or green teas & soup always helps too. I hope you feel better soon. Kathy:(

I shouldn't be responding here, cuz I really don't like to skip workouts. I've had a stomach virus for a couple weeks and I keep training........cuz in the past when I've rested, I didn't get any better. My stomach is my weak part of my body and viruses seem to settle in.

As far as respiratory problems, I've read that aerobics and such can actually open up the breathing passages and make you feel better. I've also read that you shouldn't work out if you have a fever...NEVER and if you have muscle aches. I generally use that as a general guide. I usually start to workout and if I feel weak, I just lift lighter or do a lighter intensity. However, you may start to work out and find you're at 90% and able to push. I think you'd be good to take some Zinc, Vit C and try working out and take your intensity level from there......after you see how you feel.

Thanks, all. I took zinc yesterday, though I thought it was an allergy. Skipped the workout this morning and went into the office, but wound up coming home in the afternoon and taking a long nap. Whole body feels kind of achy and I have chills, so I guess that settles the question of whether or not it's my allergies! Guess I'll skip the workout today and probably tomorrow, and see how this develops. Will read about other people's workouts here instead!

Zinc never seems to work for me, though I take it the moment I feel something coming on. I always get the cold anyhow, and it seems full-force.

Oh, Bunbun, I'm totally with you. Left work early yesterday to come home and sleep. I kept thinking it was allergies, then my throat got really sore, the congestion kept getting worse, and here I am today, sick with a cold. I've lost my appetite and all I want is hot soup. I was just on my 12th day in a row of working, and work was very stressful, and my body let me know who's boss.

I just took: esther-C, Vitamin E with selenium, zinc, and my usual flax seed oil, calcium plus and gingko biloba. My whole family swears by cold-eez as Charlotte mentioned, but I tried it once and I had some kind of bad reaction. I may send DH out to get some today to try it again. I've got to be in good shape by Monday as I'm conducting an important meeting.

How are you feeling?

Hi Nancy. That sounds like what I have! Thought it was allergies at first, but then I got a really bad sore throat. I worked half the day yesterday, then came home and slept. My throat still hurts a lot and I have a postnasal drip, but it doesn't seem to be developing into sneezing so far (fingers crossed--every time I say that I wind up with a cold that lasts a month). Been living on hot soup for 2 days, and like you, I have to be at work for a meeting on Monday. Cabin fever and lack of workout has set in, though, so I think I'm going to actually try to shower and get out in the sun for a little while. I'll have a better idea of how sick I am once I get outside.

You know, I'm so careful at work to wash my hands a lot, especially after touching "public" surfaces like the computers in the conference room. My co-workers make fun of me for being germphobic. :p I miss most of the illnesses that go around the office, but whenever I go through a period of stress, I wind up getting really sick once the stress is over. I think I must pick it up on the subway--I don't touch the rails and I wash my hands after taking the subway, but when you're surrounded on all sides by sniffling and sneezing people, it's a losing battle. I sometimes swear I'll start wearing a mask, like they do on the Tokyo subways!

Anyhow, I hope you feel better. Sleep lots--I think it really helped me to just collapse yesterday.

Yup, sounds like we're having the same experience. I know what you mean. I can avoid everything that is going around when I'm not stressed out, but when I'm stressed, as soon as the stress lets up a bit, wham.

I was working against some tight deadlines, then the court postponed my matter until June, I relaxed a bit, and then the cold hit.

My throat is SO scratchy today. I don't feel like doing much, so I'm lying in bed reading "What You Wear Can Change Your Life" by Trinny and Susannah. Someone on these boards recommended it, and I'm really liking it. It's mostly pictures; just my speed for today.

Thank you, person who recommended the Trinny and Susannah book.

LOL...I wound up going out for all of 10 minutes, then coming back home to slump on the couch and watch "What Not To Wear" (the US version).

My throat hurts and is scratchy. If I had a fever, I'd be running to the doctor because it feels like strep. But without a fever I have to assume it's a virus. bleah. I need a "What Not To Wear" marathon this weekend or I may go out of my mind just sitting around, being sick. The weird thing is that I don't feel as virusy as I did yesterday--I am actually feeling better, except that my throat is killing me.
