Exercise 7 Days a week?

Hi Everyone!

I posted this in the Ask Cathe forum too, but am wondering about the exercise habits of everyone here.

I almost always workout 7 days a week and have been doing so for probably about a year. If I'm traveling for work and unable to exercise or am sick, then I might miss a workout, but for the most part, I exercise 7 days a week. I think in part it's because since I have a desk job, I just feel more energetic if I get some activity in daily. I'm not sure I could go home after work, and continue to sit some more.

I'm wondering, is working out daily a bad thing? I don't feel like I'm overtraining (I don't have any of the signs) and always feel energized post-workout.

I've read through various sources on the topic, and while one might say you should get at least one rest day, a different one will say you should do 'some' activity every day. I basically do 5 days of cardio and 2 days of strength, but I prefer to keep my cardio and strength separate, which means I'm working out every day.

Do you think keeping this type of schedule okay, as long as I don't reach the point where I feel as though I'm overtraining?

Thanks Greatly!!
Nicole

Hi Nicole,
I can only speak from my own personal experience, but I exercise 7 days a week and have had no problems. Like you, I've seen sources that say a rest day is important, but also I've read/heard that some activity is encouraged every day. I'm a firm believer in listening to your body and if you feel good working out every day and it's not interfering with anything, then keep it up!

Nicole,

I have been exercising every day for years - I haven't had any ill effects or any injuries. I am 47 years old. I have never experienced burnout and my body does not feel overtrained. There is alot of literature out there - my motto "take what you like and leave the rest"

This has helped me to stay in good shape, especially after having 10 children - I have 8 at home and I home school, my youngest is just under 2 and I carry him all around up and down stairs and do not get winded. Many of my friends who don't work out have to have their husbands drop them off near doors because they don't like to walk. They are all out of shape cardiovascularly. My workouts are my sanity and my stamina - I do some cardio everyday and some strength training daily too.

I don't think it matters as long as, like you
said, you don't have any of the symptoms of overtraining. Seriously, if I did that, it would all be over. Leg workouts really have a tendency to clear my workout schedule for a few days sometimes!!! Oh, and I don't mind a bit!!

I say go for it...

I incorporate a rest day into my weekly workouts. For me I find I get stronger with the day off. I remember years ago a guy friend who was in awesome shape taught me that when you are lifting heavy the rest is as important as the working out. He sure looked great ;)

Probably if you are doing a lot of cardio then it's not such an issue but with the lifting seems the day off is key.

Nicole you sound pretty sane about it too - its the person who freaks out if they are sick and still works out and suprise suprise doesnt get better -

Well, my experience is this.
I use or make up rotations that have 6 days in them per week. However I am active on the rest day. For example, a tennis match &/or stretching... or extra hard housework- like shoveling this time of year LOL.

TEN KIDS.......and you home school....you are woman, hear you roar. I have 4 kids and I can hardly wait for them to go to school.

Hi Nicole. I do 6 days a week. Almost the same as you....I keep my cardio and weights seperate. I agree, if you feel great doing 7 days then keep it up. I have had to switch my routine over the years because my body was telling me to. Your body will let you know when you are doing too much. If that does happen, just make sure to pay attention to the signs.
