Excercise and vacation

Our family vacation is coming soon. We are going up East to visit some friends and tour around. What do you all do to stay on track with excercise? I think I will be ok with eating. I have been trying to eat clean and I know I have choices in restaurants. I will bring some of my own food too. I w/o 6 days a week. Cardio and weights. I know I can get up and run or powerwalk but what about my weights? Any suggestions??

I generally will take along workout clothes and plan on working out at the hotel gym... and I generally try to get in at least 2 runs outdoors wherever I am since I think that's fun.

I definitely don't stress out about the workouts while I'm on vacation, though!! It's vacation and I prefer to spend the morning with my DH having a huge breakfast! :)

Amy,

I couldn't agree more with your outlook! Vacation is a time for us to escape our daily lives, and I used to stress years ago whenever i went away and couldn't get my workouts in.

After a while, I began to notice that the break was just what I needed to recharge the batteries, so between the walking and swimming, I get all the exercise I need while on vacation.

Working out is enjoyable for me, so part of the fun of vacation is being able to continue my working out the best I can.

I always run. Depending on where you are staying either go outside for a run, or use the hotel treadmill. If I'm in a hotel, I will use the gym's free weights to do Cathe's PUB from memory. Another thing I do is take along Slim Series Burn It Up and a resistance band. This one is perfect for doing in a hotel room. Of course, you also have to have a DVD player or laptop with you.

I just got back from vacation. I ate very poorly but knew I would. I eat about 90 percent healthy most of the time. We were at the beach so I walked and did lots of swimming. I brought my kettlebells and did an interval workout with swimming and the kettlebells.

If I stay at a hotel I usually use the hotel gym and if the hotel has lots of floors, I usually find the stairs and run/walk them.

I try not to stress too much as I usually workout 6 days a week. I know that once I'm back, I'll be back on schedule so any damage I've done will be repaired rather quickly. I try to enjoy my vacation first and then try to fit in a workout if I can.

Bringing a laptop with dvd playeris a good suggestion. A workout that would work well with vacation is the Amy Bento 10-minute solution workout. It only uses a dyna band.

I normally don't workout on vacation. I go w/ the intent of using the hotel gym and at least spending a FEW minutes there, but it never happens. I try to watch what I eat and I figure with all the extra walking we normally do and the bouncing and splashing in the pool, I'm ok for activity. If I'm tired by the end of the evening, I've had enough activity. I'd rather enjoy my vacation than stress about trying to find time to make it to the gym. You won't lose any progress in your lifting in only a week, you'll be able to literally pick it back up from where you left off.

I am going on vacation next week (MY HONEYMOON!) and I plan to workout while I am there. I am taking my step and a few of my favorite cardio dvds, but of course there will be chasing after my toddler, swimming, and walking.

I am wrapping up about 6-8 weeks of heavy lifting, so I will not be lifting on my vacation. You might want to take some tubing or resistance bands in your suitcase, though...

I'm planning a two week vacation out west in July. We don't usually go away that long and I'm not too happy with the thought of taking two weeks off from strength training. In the past when we've taken long road trips I've brought stuff like Slim Series and a couple of hand weights with me to keep me going, but we're flying this time around and I don't want to pack weights in my suitcase. I'm on the hunt for some workouts that use my own body weight and minimal space. If I find any I'll post them.

Those of you who work out on vacation impress me. I take the entire week off and count morning walks on the beach and strolls to the ice cream stand as my official exercise. :7

I'm with you, LaughingWater!! I'm actually going on vacation in two weeks (a graduation present!!). I am considering bringing my laptop with some downloads from yogadownload.com but I haven't made up my mind yet. Other than that, I will be getting in walking at Sea World and Universal Studios and I will be swimming in the huge hotel pool with my daughter and hubby. Maybe they'll put us on the third or fourth floor and then I can just walk up and down the stairs a lot.

I usually take 3 rest weeks a year, and they usually fall during christmas week, spring break week and one week in the summer(I have young kids in school so its easy to plan when to take these LOL). That way I train really hard for the rotation before these planned rest weeks and then I know I "deserve" my week off. then I only do stretching and walking. and on vacation that's usually doable.

In my regular life, I sit at a desk about 10 hours per day, Monday through Friday. When I go on vacation this July, I'll be walking, biking, and just generally being MUCH more active. For me, vacation is not just a rest for the mind, it's also a change of pace for the body. Of course, it depends on the type of vacation. Sometimes when you're just going to visit people it can be a bit sedentary. But if you're going to be "touring around" and seeing new sights, I'm sure you'll get in plenty of activity!

I admire all those who work out on holiday. However, I am always very happy to give my body a complete break (apart from the usual swimming and sightseeing). I work out 6 days a week and I think it's a good opportunity to give my old joints (!) a recovery period. Above all, I don't feel guilty about this and I'm sure my body benefits from the time off.

For your info, I remember reading a forum where Cathe came up with a holiday workout. Someone a bit more techno-savvy than me might be able to post that link for you!

Enjoy your holiday!
