elliptical vs treadmill

Hi,
I am looking for an addition to my workout room. I have a treadmill and am considering an elliptical. For those of you who have both...do I need an elliptical??? Do you get a different workout?? Do you feel worked out??
Thanks!!!!!!!

I don't have a treadmill, although I've used them at the gym. I do have a Precor Elliptical and I LOVE it! My advice to you would be to try an elliptical at the store to see what you think. Personally, the elliptical is my favorite cardio machine and a great way to cross train if you're a runner. I definitely feel like a get a great work out, especially with Cardio Coach. I sweat buckets. ;)

I agree, try them both.

If it were me, I'd go for the elliptical. Lower impact = easier on the joints.

Ellipitical vs treadmill

I recently purchased an ellipitical machine in November to vary my workout routine. Also, my treadmill has been a dust collector for the past 10 years, so I was hoping to invest in a piece of equipment I would actually use. I am happy to report that I use my ellipitical machine regularly and feel that it is a great workout. My heart is pumping, and I break a sweat a lot sooner than most cardio work-outs. Most ellipitical machines have various programs built in based on your exercise goals. I get the best work-out from the interval training mode. You can change the tension, ride forwards or backwards thus hitting, leg, hip and glut muscles you don't usually target with a treadmill. I've read that the ellipitical works more legs muscles than the treadmill because of the work your leg has to do to bring the panel the foot rests on around in an ellipitical motion. I enjoy the smoother workout on the ellipitical. I think the constant pounding of running on the treadmill is what I didn't enjoy. I was able to buy a floor model that was being discontinued for less than half the original price at Sports Authority. I hope that helps and good luck.

I have both and am very glad to have the option of switching back & forth! I love to run but it doesn't love me:eek: so when my joints start to get cranky or my hips start griping, I use my elliptical for awhile. It is gentler on the body but still an awesome workout especially with a Cardio Coach workout as Michele already pointed out;)

I would advise you to try an elliptical before buying because it is a very different motion than walking or running. I cannot get used to it at all, it is a movement pattern that does not feel organic or natural to me so I would rather power walk any day. Don't end up with a piece of equipment you don't feel comfortable on.
