Elliptical Recommendations, please

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but the purchase of a new elliptical may very well be in my near future.

I LOVE my treadmill. But it's starting to make some noises that don't sound very good.:) I'm going to try to take a look at it and fix it myself if it needs it (I replaced the tread belt about 18 months ago!). BUT.....with my PF acting up with higher mileage weeks, and these squeaks, I'm wondering if somebody's trying to tell me something.

I was at Dick's with my boys yesterday and we tried them all out. My older DS got on one and yelled, "MOM....this one is PERFECT for you." Yeah...until I checked out the price tag of $1299.00! lol

SO....what ellip do you own, use and/or recommend???

Gayle, you might be surprised at how cheaply you can find stuff through things like Craig's list and the classified ads in your newspaper.

I have a Precor and it was ridiculously expensive, but I LOVE it! I've had it for over 2 years and it's never needed a repair. I have seen them for cheap in Craig's list. ;)

Carole Mckmain has one that she loves -- the name is right on the tip of my tongue but I can't think of what it's called!! I HATE when that happens! LOL!!!

I have an Octane elliptical and love it! Unfortunately it is $$$ but it had the best feel and fit for my body. I agree with Cynthia, it is important to try them out in the store as they can all feel a little different.

WOW! Thanks everybody! I did notice a big difference in the way certain machines felt. Some felt like I was reaching too far forward for the handles, others felt like I was too low to the ground, etc. So I agree with the need to try them out.

I'm "slightly" partial to the NordicTrack brand. their ski machine was my very VERY first fitness equipment purchase way back when.

THANKS AGAIN!

Gayle

I've seen the Nordictrac at Costco, It is a great looking elliptical!

I tried an Octane about 2 years ago. If my Matrix ever bites the dust, I would have to seriously consider that one. It has some great bells and whistles;)
Oh, and if one of my kids moves out....I'll add a second one because I can see the extra bedroom as a cardio room! I'm so bad:p

Same here Gayle and I still have my original Nordic Track!!...:D

How cool, Gayle! My gym has at least half a dozen sets of different elliptical machines. I've tried them all and my favorite by far is the Precor EFX series. It fits every body size without adjustments, has an amazingly smooth ride, and just feels "right". If I were looking for a home elliptical, I would start with Precor and try to find a home version of the commerical machine, maybe refurbished to cut down on cost. Just my two cents worth.

LOL!! The ski machine was my first piece of equipment too ;) After I got my TM & elliptical, I put it my garage sale and no-one wanted it. I even put a free sign on it just to get it out of my house and it still didn't go:confused:.

Hi ya' gf! I swear by my Precor EFX as well. I have the 5.23 and I LOVE it! The adjustable ramp kicks any workout and when you add in a CC or an itrain, it's total sweatfest. I think this is the same one that KAS has and she likes hers quite well. Yes, they are pricey, but I agree - look around and see what you can find. I have seen some great prices on these in the local classifieds.

good timing on this post gayle!
i think dh and i are caving this week to buy one.
thinking about horizon or precor
....maybe we can get a date night to go to dicks and try them out again - its been a while.
we'll look for thay efx series that was mentioned.

btw...fyi....don't go to dicks.com - it sure ain't sporting goods!!!

I love my Octane! I originally was looking for a Precor but ended up with the Octane. My DH is a big man and we needed a machine that would hold up well with his size. (Our justification for the cost!) He's only used it about 5 times since we got it but I ended up with a great machine. ;)

I have one more- I have the Sole E55 and love love love it! I had major knee troubles after my daughter was born and this was the only piece of workout equipment I could use. Now I have recovered so I can do Cathe :D but I still love my elliptical. I think Dick's carries them so you can try them out, but we ordered ours online. Here is a review of it with a link to the website where we ordered it. We've had it 3-4 years and have had no troubles with it at all.

I have one too. :p Gayle, have you ever tried the Arc Trainer? I LOVE it. I use it every Sunday at the gym. It's similar to an elliptical but is more intense.

<sigh> Wish I had room for one of these suckers!

I was just about to jump in on this thread and sugest looking at an Arc Trainer.

You can mimic the range of motion of running without the impact, and also the stair climbing motion of an elliptical. I have only tried it a few times (they had a demo machine at my gym which they gym did not end up buying :() I agree that it is more challenging.

We had a nordic track elliptical that lasted a good 10 years. My husband used it almost every day and he's a big man (was well over 300 pounds when he first started using it. He's around 250 now).

BWAHAHAHA!!! I have done this too...yikes!

OMG!!! Jodi, thank you for your post. I was going to ask Kate what the heck she meant. LOL But when I read your post, it clicked.

THANKS everybody for even MORE INFO!!! I LOVE YOU GUYS! I truly appreciate your taking the time to help me! I'll keep you posted, I promise!

Lorrie-I liked the one you have when I was for my visit, so I'll keep that in mind as I start to comparison shop.

Gayle

p.s. I have to admit, now I'm tempted to look at dicks.com! :)
