Ectochicks 11/18

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-02 AT 02:08PM (Est)[p]Angie, I should have printed that thread, duh. That sounds much more feasible. I'm thinking I'll put a post on to our ecto-sis Maribeth. I'd like to pick her brain on the subject of cardio a little more intensely.

Angela, I just happened to have Escape Your Shape. I have to say I was not very impressed with the methods of "shape changing" described. They just didn't seem tough enough. But I think I'll take a look at it again. Maybe I was too quick to dismiss.

Most fitness books I pick up are either too easy and just for beginners OR filled with gross-me-out:eek: muscle pix and super outdated advice. I wish Cathe would write a book. That would be the other side of heaven.

PS-Hope your foot feels better, Angie:'(. Wow, Borders and the library in one day, I'm jealous!

Hey, Guys. I skipped RS this a.m. and opted for a 2 mile interval workout on the treadmill. Sweatfest!!!

Angie, take care of that foot now. Every time I've ever taken up running, I get addicted, over do and get injured...then, I run on the injury cuz I can't bear to stop. Eventually, it gets worse and I have to quit altogether. Just be careful!

Julie, there are several ways to catagorize body shape/type out there, and it all gets confusing. The ecto/endo/meso thing is, IMHO, about the ability to gain muscle/fat and the cone/ruler/spoon/hourglass thing is more about where it all ends up. Kinda like the apple/pear thing. (I'm an apple and I think apple/cone kinda goes together). You do sound like a cone. I am one and my Mom is definitely one. She's always complained about having shoulders like a football player no matter how skinny her butt gets.

Re: Maribeth's advice, I was like you. I didn't know if she meant to alternate these workouts or change weekly or do them at the same time. I just decided to do it the way that Angie suggests. I had read somewhere on this board that someone got good results this way.

My eating is still good, but I'm starting to gag at the mention of beans.

Edit: We posted at the same time Julie. I just wanted to say that I agree with you on the Escape Your Shape method. I had read about it before and it just seemed to be missing something. Intense pain. Altho, I must say, that jump roping will kill ya.

CARROT CAKE RECIPE for ectos:

2 cups all-purpose flour (I have used fresh ground spelt or wheat, but I'm a die hard health nut)
1 cup Honey (I've used less than this like 3/4 cup)
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
3 cups finely shredded carrot
1 cup cooking oil (I'm going to try substituting apple sauce for half this amount)
4 eggs

Grease and flour 13 X 9 pan. Mix dry ingredients and then add wet ones (everything else) and mix in electric mixer until combined and then on medium speed for 2 minutes. Bake at 325 for 50 minutes or until you can tell it's done.

Frost with cream cheese frosting. I have used fat free whipped topping on this. Or 1/2 cup cream cheese, 1/4 cup Honey and 1/4 butter creamed together for topping, I gave up dairy so I use the FF whipped topping sometimes. I actually like the cake plain.

Keep in mind, I eat no sugar so this cake is sweet to me, but you may find that you like it sweeter and want to sub more sugar for the honey. Once you give up sugar you will find that almost anything even remotely sweet tastes heavenly.

Hope you like it!!!

Well, trust me this ecto girl got pretty darn heavy on steriods a few years ago :-hmmm, and it takes work to get shed of it too. Gaining muscle is hard so that makes it harder to burn off anything extra you gain.

geez no wonder I get frustrated!

Hi all!

I'm back at the office - feet aching like hell but I just popped 2 Ibuprofen so I should feel some relief soon. Wish I had some ice right now though! :)

You know I've been reading and I really think that I have or I'm in the early stages of plantar fasciia (?). While flipping through a health book from our insurance company, I came across the foot section. It stated that one of the causes is the foot rolling inward. Yesterday, when I tried the shoe out with new inserts, I realized that my suspicions were true. When I walk my feet feel like their sliding in, rolling inward. So if this is happening while I'm just walking it must be worse when I'm running, or the impact is worse. Although I don't really notice it while running but I can imagine the constant sliding inward is the major problem.

When I spoke with the store owner yesterday and explained what was happening he just offered a (free) new pair of inserts, suggested that I probably bruised my foot while running somehow, and suggested that I ice, elevate and take pain relievers and lay off the running for a few days. Never once did he acknowledge that the shoe itself could be at fault, that he chose the wrong shoe for me or offer to fit me into a different shoe. Well he did offer to fit me into a different style shoe but NEXT time. I'm thinking he just doesn't want to refund my money. I have never had any foot problems until I bought this particular Nike shoe.

I'm in a dilemna here because I train with his group and I understand he is the sole owner of this small store, but sheesh! I think what I'm going to do is box up this pair and go out and buy a regular pair of cross trainers. So I'm tossing this all into my "lesson learned" category. And seeing that I won't be running for a while I have time to search and try on other brands/styles that have more support and are made of a sturdier fabric that the ones I have now!

Robin - I will be careful! I don't plan to run until Sunday at the earliest. I think I'll spend my time doing floor legwork and abs. Oops! Guess there's no reason that I should leave out the upper body, :) I can do most moves from a seated position if necessary and I certainly know tons of modifications and exercise substitutions. :) This may turn out to be a good week after all! And if I really feel like I need to do some cardio I can always go the Y and hop on one of the bikes!

Julie- I read that book too and it does seem like the exercise plan was too easy. Yes, Robin, not intense enough! I tend to look at these type of books as a starting point for life long couch potatoes who have decided to get up and do something. I gave that to my mom to read. And all the other books seem to be strictly for competing body builders. There really needs to be a book for the rest of us!

One of my coworkers just brought me a plate full of goodies (were doing our office Thanksgiving potluck today). I can't wait - must eat now! :)

TTFN,
Angie

LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-02 AT 09:01PM (Est)[p]Angie, when I run too much I always get tendonitis in my right ankle. It's always kinda talking to me when I do high impact and I have to watch it....that's until I got some arch supports. These may help you with your pronation. (I think that's what it's called) Anyway, they are Spenco arch supports and you can get them at sporting goods stores (probably where you bought your Nikes). I got the kind that are the length of your foot with a hard black plastic on the bottom. Now, my ankle doesn't bother me. They are relatively cheap and maybe those shoes won't be a waste of $$.

Can't hurt.

Hey, Angela, you talked me into it. I'm starting the False Fat Diet tomorrow. Not for health reasons, but to lose wt. fast. My friend did this a few months ago and lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks.
