Ectochick Check 11/11

AKirkland

Cathlete
Hey Ladies,

This week's meeting of the Ectochicks will now come to order. :)

Following Maribeth's suggestion (see the "putting on muscle thread"), instead of doing a couple of weeks heavy, a couple of weeks light, I'm going to do both in the same week. I started last Friday, so here's how it will work:

Friday CTX UB (light)
Saturday off
Sunday LL (light, it sure didn't *feel* light!)
Monday SH Chest/Back (heavy)
Tuesday SH Legs (heavy)
Wednesday off
Thursday SH Bis and Tris (heavy)

DH told me he couldn't see any difference in my legs. This is frustrating, because I can sure see some new muscle development, but I guess it's not obvious to others yet. At least he's honest.

Y'all have a great week!

Angela

Hi Angela!

Pfive! Present! :)

Angela, I may have to ask for advice from Maribeth. I need help coordinating weight training with running. I've looked at 3 different running rotations and they seem a bit much. I keep wondering where on earth do I find the time to squeeze in some REST! Maybe once I get used to all the running my legs can possibly handle the overload but I certainly don't want to loose any muscle that I already have. Hmmm, who do think I should post my question - Maribeth, Honeybunch or both?

Here are my workout plans for this week:

Sun- easy run/2 miles (included steep hill back home) DONE
Mon- step aerobics
Tue- speedwork with group
Wed- easy run/2 miles (flat)
Thu- yoga/pilate's
Fri- long run/4.5-5 miles
Sat- Power Hour

I should be getting LL in the mail this week! I can't wait to try it! Since really getting into running I've been thinking about using higher reps (mainly on the legs) to help build endurance. Hopefully Ll will fulfill that thought! :) I've also been thinking about doing more floor work. I was doing really well for a while and for some reason slacked off.

Time to go read your thread and then post my own!

I'm off! :) :)

Hey Angela - I converted to doing light and heavy on the same week and I'm completely sold on it. I have definitely seen an improvement, both in visible muscle and strength. Good luck with that approach and I bet hubby will see a difference soon.

My husband on the other hand says my arms are getting more muscular! I'm ecstatic about that. I just love the tank top rotation. Its working! Here's my week:

Sat - 7 mile hike (went to Arkansas - it is just so beautiful this time of the year!)
Sun - 4 mile hike in the morning plus PS CST and CTX 10 10 10 in the evening
Mon - PS BBA
Tues - IMAX
Wed - LL
Thursday - CTX Upper Body
Friday - cardio of choice (probably run or MIC)
Sat - MIS
Sun - rest

Have a great week everyone.

Arkansas? Now you're in my territory! Whereabouts did you go hiking? You chose an excellent weekend - the weather was certainly unseasonably warm and I think the trees are at their peak. I noticed as I was driving into town for church yesterday the Bradford pears are beautiful! I live in Scott - a little spot in the road east of Little Rock.

Briee Present:

Howdy ectos.

Angela, sometimes visible progress depends on the husband. Point in case, a few years ago I had 14 inches cut off my hair which was just above my waist (cut to just below my shoulders). I ran into an old friend who said immediately, "wow, you really got your hair cut". My husband looked at me amazed and said "I didn't notice that you got your hair cut, when did you get that done". I replied, "three months ago dear". Now my dh is a wonderful husband, just doesn't notice things like that. So keep that in mind and keep at it. I'm very intrigued with the rotation you are on. I just may try this, although I want to kind of incorporate it into the TTR as I saw such progress with that rotation. I just finished three weeks of S&H and I'm just not sure what to do this week so maybe I'll try your rotation.

For lack of any plan this week I did PS CST and BBA this morning and will probably do LL tomorrow, then maybe I'll do some slow and heavy late in the week. I'm going to check out your post from Maribeth if I can find it. Keep us posted on this rotation. My moms in Bella Vista and said you had great weather this past weekend, we here in WI did too!! Don't know if I'm really looking forward to winter. Oh yes, DH had me take his measurements last night and is hopefully going to start working out too. SO...anyone who's husband is working out out there, I'd appreciate knowing what they are doing so I can fill him in!!

Briee

Okay Angela, I just did a search for "putting on muscle" from Maribeth and couldn't seem to come up with anything. Was it within the last month and any other tips on finding it. Thanks so much.

Angela - I love Arkansas. It is so pretty. I live in Dallas, TX, so my husband and I love to drive to the Ouachita region to get away from it all. We went to Lake Catherine near Hot Springs this weekend and did a trail called the Sunset Trail in the National Park plus some trails around the lake. The fall foliage was absolutely beautiful! I came back totally destressed. I have never been to Little Rock though.

Briee - this may be the thread you were looking for. Hope that helps.

Here's a link to that topic:

I would have posted it earlier, but our Internet access has been really crawling today. The problem is widespread, but I don't know what's causing it.

Whoops - sorry - just saw prfitness already found it for you...

Julie's here!

Good day, my what a busy bunch. I wish I could go to Arkansas! It sounds SO beautiful. I drove my 17 y.o. "baby" son, a six footer, to Fargo on Saturday to look North Dakota State U. What a beautiful drive.

I spent yesterday trying to "de-mouse" my house. Holy cow, we haven't had a mouse in 16 years. (Imagine me as the Bill Murray character in Caddy Shack. Yes, that went on all day.)

Anyhoo, back to exercise and stuff. I think I lasted two days on Body Rx, then I started reading some of Maribeth's posts and I said "What the heck am I thinking?!". It's just not for me. Even if DID lose weight on a plan like that, I don't think I'd be able to live the rest of my life on it. BUT one thing I will take from it is increase to my protein in take. There's a couple of points of food philosophy I disagree with Dr. Connolley on. One, that it's just a "food problem" that's made our population fat. The other being soy. He does not advocate the intake of soy foods, which I (in the throes of perimenopause) MUST have. He also doesn't like nuts/peanuts. Which I happen to think are one fantastic food. Not saying the programs not good, but it's not for me.

My fitness plan this week:

Sunday S&H Calves and Shoulders
Monday S&H Triceps/Biceps and 10-10-10
Tuesday Bryan Kest Power Yoga 2
Wednesday S&H Chest/Back 30 minutes cardio
Thursday Pilates
Friday S&H Legs/Shoulders*
Saturday YAHOO! Aquajock's H2o class

*(Yes, doing shoulders/calves twice.)

You guys Annette's class is SO awesome. It's like doing a Cathe class in the pool with all the water resistance working against you. I love it. AND Annette is so cool, too. She does possess those Cathe-Arms we all covet.;-)

Hope you all have a great week!

Julie

Julie, my thoughts are almost exact on the Body RX. Actually I'm a vegan and definitely disagree with his diet, although I wish I could get some more protein into it without the meat. I eat LOTS of nuts and think I am relatively lean. I had a cholesterol check the other day and it was so low the machine didn't register my levels (below 150). I just don't think you need that much protein and it's not good for you in the long run as you noted! And although I don't like too much soy for other reasons I do use it in my diet. I take veggie protein powder, but wish there were more sources that are dairy free out there (i.e. protein bars, most use dairy products).

Now, regarding Annette's class, I am MAJOR jealous that you are able to attend these. Next to a Cathe class my dream is to attend one of AJ's. I have lots of family in the Minneapolis area and one of these days I'm going to show up for a class ( I live in the Lacrosse area about 4 hours from there). Question, do you need to belong to the club to attend? What club is it??

Looks like you will have a tough week of S&H, have fun!!!! I posted a note that I enjoyed LL while I was on the S&H rotation and then I did it this morning, I don't know what I was thinking. (Oh yes, I like the music, that's what I was thinking!)

Gluteal development

All right this maybe more information than you want, but I have to add: after six weeks of Slow and Heavy Legs my gluteals have this incredible round quality that I haven't seen back there for years. I kid you not, ecto's it's looking like there's two bowling balls back there. It's almost like I'm not an ecto in that paticular spot any more. Just thought I'd pass this on. I know you're all terribly fixated on my rearview. (NOT!):7

Julie

THAT WOULD BE SO COOOL!

Yes, Annette teaches at the health club were I am member, but there are certain free days when you can bring guests. Otherwise the cost is $15.00 for a one-day guest pass, I do believe. BUT Annette **I think** can get discount passes. But you should really talk to her about that, before I get myself into trouble.

But hey, if you're ever in the Minneapolis area (THIS GOES FOR ALL OF YOU ECTO'S) please let me know. It would be SO fun to chat for a while.

I'm also going to have to visit the U.P. of Michigan to see Michigan Tech University in Houghton. Is that anywhere near you? (Yes, I am geographically challenged.) I think I'll visit there when it's not so snowy. (Yeah, right)

Check out that weighted vest thread on the Open Forum here. I think I'm going to Target this week!!

Julie;-)

RE: Gluteal development

Julie, your latest post has shaken up my plan for the week. Hearing about your rearview has made my day (guess you can only state that on a site like this without sounding incredibly weird). I just came off of S&H (3 weeks) last week and started up the TTR, but I think I may do as follows to keep my bum going in the right direction,

M - PS CST BBA
T - LL
W - Upper body CTX
T - Cardio or Pilates
F - S&H Legs and Should
S - S&H Bis and tris
S - Off or some cardio

I would like to keep up the heavy lifting for my tush so I can see your results here in my own mirror. I have noticed change over the past three weeks and would like to keep that going. How's that rotation sound?? I do want to keep the arms bulking too so I will not be disgraced if I ever get a chance to visit you all in Aqua class!!!! Ha ha. Does Annette REALLY have Cathe arms man I'm so jealous!!! How about the bicep vein?? I've been trying hard to develope that as well (I know this is silly, but to coin a phrase, it looks so cool). I've got lots of tricep veins, but no visible bicep vein yet. Thanks again for yor post.

RE: Gluteal development

Julie, forgot to ask you what kind of weight are you doing on those squats to get that kind of definition? Just curious. Do you use heavy weight machines at the gym or just S&H?

Briee

RE: Gluteal development

Hi Briee,

Now keep in mind I do have some fat laying on top of there to add to the roundness. But, I was doing the S&H one day split paired with all CTX weight work and (ewww!) Leaner Legs, both one time per week.

Your rotation sounds very tough, but, you don't need to do cardio, do you? Cardio seems to sap so much energy from me. It's almost like Kryptonite for a "supergal" like me. I think Maribeth's advice about mixing things up (changing rep speed, rests, heavy vs, light) is really good. I think I'll follow that. She's an ecto too.;-)

Yes, Annette looks awesome. She's just a tiny little thing. She doesn't have legs like Cathe, but her arms are developed very nicely, with each muscle having a clear shape and definition to it but NOT huge. If that makes sense. And she is just as serious AND relentless in the pool as Cathe is on land. Her workout, while it was not intervals, felt a lot like IMAX in the water. (So fun to do plyo work in the pool.) She even pulls that counting down thing where you think you're going to be done and then she starts all over. For a "bonus" of course. Don't ya love those "bonuses" from hell?

Veins: yes I was "grossed out" by this at first but, now I think its looks so cool. I do get a huge squiggly vein on the inner forearm while lifting but that's about it.

As far my weight goes for S&H Legs I must say, it's a measly 35 pounds, no where to go but up. Sometimes I wonder about the need to go extremely HEAVY. I've gotten super-sensitive to noticing when I may begin enlisting another muscle to assist the working one. When I do go heavy, I believe preventing "assistance" has helped much more than trying to be "the heavy queen of the USA." But my plan is to stay on S&H until the NEW DVD's arrive:p LOL.

Julie (bored today, on the computer a lot)

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-02 AT 09:09PM (Est)[p]Hey, Guys. I've been reading this thread and now I'm confused as to what my plan should be. After reading thru the "Putting On Muscle" thread, and seeing Marbeth's post re: mixing the types of workouts (heavy/slow vs fast/light OR fast twitch vs slow twitch, like Angela is doing), and her response to Pammer, I'm thinking that I should focus more on the fast twitch fibers (slow/heavy) and more cardio. Leaving slow twitch (fast/light) for after I decrease the body fat. ?????????

So confused.

Mon-Look Great Nekked Butt/thighs (stop laughing)
Tues-Perfectly Fit Arms (Claudia Schiffer....I SAID STOP LAUGHING!!) Only the shoulders tho cuz I'm still sore from Saturday's upper body workout.
Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat-I'm gonna have to think about it.

RE: Gluteal development

Hi Ecto's......

Havent posted here in couple weeks, but I have caught some of you on other posts. I have a question regarding heavy weight lifting (especially in regard to SH series for the Legs)

As Cathe points out, I can go heavier than what Im lifting now for squats etc, but cannot get it over my head. I can only go up to 40 pounds for that reason. I have a 10 lb weighted vest. So that's 50 lbs total............Where do I go from here?/???

RE: Gluteal development

Robin,

I've lost track - have you posed your specific questions/goals to Maribeth? I have some disagreements with her regarding diet, but I've been very impressed with her knowledge and professionalism, as well as her willingness to give us the benefit of her expertise for free. Until Cathe wraps taping for the new series and can get back with you on the "overweight ecto" questions, Maribeth would be an excellent guide. She's even been willing to email me one on one - very nice of her!

RE: Gluteal development

Do you have access to a gym? If so, you can supplement your Cathe workouts with some squats on the leg press machine. You'll find that you can go *a lot* heavier. I can do leg presses with 100 lbs. on the machine - that's about double what I can do with free weights. I worry about my knees and my lower back when doing really heavy squats with free weights.

Next, do you have someone who can spot you with a heavier barbell? If my husband's around, I have him lift and place the barbell for me, then remove it when I'm done.

If neither of the above are an option for you, remember that as you continue your workouts, your upper body will get stronger and you'll be able to get more weight over your head to your shoulders. Until then, you can concentrate on going heavier on your lunges, which as Cathe says, are really like a one-legged squat.

RE: Gluteal development

HI Angela,

You are always so speedy and informative with your responses. thankyou

I actually have a gym so I can do the squats from there(Technically it's my hubbies).. I dont have access to a TV so I cant do the squats from in there using Cathe. I was wondering, how many sets and reps do you do at the gym with the heaviest weight (100 lbs). What else other than squats do you incorporate in to the gym workout???
