Eat To Live

I must tell everyone, when I lost over 35 pounds, was not only Cathe's DVD's, but also of the book called "Eat To Live" by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

When I stopped eating that way, about a year ago, I started slowly gaining weight. I was beside myself. Then last week, I found my book again. Tonight I've lost 3 pounds in 4 days. It feels like I'm on a high and nothing can stop me now. I remember the same thing happened to me before. My body started losing slowly later on, and then about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds a week from then on until I lost my fat.

I now know, that when I start to tweak things up a bit, I need to really know what I am doing. I started using meat for protein and added more processed food in the diet. Not good. I'll make a note of that. Never again will I make that mistake.

I'm back on track! YEAH!:7

Just mentioned it for anyone who wants to seriously lose weight. It works better than you realize. The fat melts away, and everything you eat tastes like gourmet food,(started for me on the 4th day) and satisfying.

Try it, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I heard that there is also a version provided that allows some animal protein.. that would be the way I would probably have to start.. can you provide a "typical" day of foods that you eat when you are on this? Thanks

Deb

I have the book and I'm a vegetarian... I really don't need to lose weight but when I ate that way I lost a couple of pounds in about 10 days.... It's healthiest way of eating (IMO) but It's really hard ti stick to as well.... I may try it again.... I'm glad that you found something that works for you :)

Several years ago I took up running and also incorporated the ideas of this book in my eating habits and have continued to this day. I did not and do not now follow it to the letter. I do eat a little meat (not much) But I do believe that these principles are sound ones and definitely helped me to finally reach my weight loss goal and maintain it, even at age 50.

Deb,

There is a version with meat in it, but it is less strict, for moderate weight loss. You still lose the weight, but not as fast.

A typical day of food with no meat is;

Breakfast: Fresh fruit
Lunch: salad, beans on top, and more fruit
Dinner: salad and two cooked vegetables (1 pound), fruit dessert
Note: I also use raw nuts, avocado & flax seed, for fat.

But this sounds boring. It really isn't though when you use their reciepes. When the book puts together certain foods, it truly tastes heavenly.

Today I didn't lose anything. But I know what I have to do to compensate for it. I have been doing cardio for 30 min. for 4 days. I found my workout yesterday was too easy. I need to up that to 35 min. and go a little harder. That's where I'll tweak from now on.

I also found that eating processed foods with all the additives and chemicals in it, is addicting to me. And when I eat that way nothing else tastes good. When I eat the way this book is telling me how to, I get use to it. I"m able to taste these foods for what they really are. YUMMY!

This way of eating is not hard to do when things are so good tasting. So far, I'm not hungry in-between meals. I don't feel full or stuffed, and I'm not hungry. When it is time to eat, I look forward to it and the old tummy wants food, but I'm not starving.

Hope that helps,

Janie

I have been following ETL loosly for about a year also.

Some people think it is hard, but honestly if you remember that veggies are the main course it is an easy mind set. I am spending less time preparing dinners than I did before ETL.

We typically eat a large salade for dinner with a protein source on top of it. The salad is at least 4 -6 cups of greens/veggies per person. I also make my own salad dressing (a vinagrette) and it is not lo-fat, but it is with canola oil. I am careful not to put very much on and toss well in a large bowl before serving it on individual dinner plates.

For protein sources I often choose legumes or seafood . My family will also have have poultry once per week or less. I do not eat land animals or eggs and very rarely have anything dairy. All of our granins pastas are whole wheat and I eat 3 servings or less per day.

I will make a pasta with seafood or roast veggies once per week or so, but the serving size is 1 or 2 oz. of pasta and 'lotsa' veggies.

PS- I haven't given up chocolate, but I still maintain a lower weight than before ETL.

Judy, would you mind posting your vinaigrette recipe when you have time? Do you ever use EVOO for salad dressing or cooking?

How do you manage the 3 meal a day suggestion and what do you think about "toxic hunger"? I can understand that sometimes we just crave food and that you can train your body to be hungry 3x or 8x (!) a day. I have been eating small amounts several times a day for years and cannot get myself to a 3x a day schedule. I hate feeling full, so I eat small amounts every 2-3 hours. Dr. Fuhrman, however, would like me to eat until I am very full and then wait until the next mealtime. I have a smoothie in the morning and about 2-3 hours later I am starving - But according to Dr. Fuhrman that is not true hunger (my stomach is growling, but I don't feel any sensation in my throat). I do think, however, that eating less frequently would be better for me. My dh and all his family have always eaten just 3x a day and NEVER snacked. They all maintain their weight effortlessly.

Also, after doing a spinerval w/o, I just feel I need something to eat! How are you managing that? I'm starting to think maybe I should follow a easy w/o plan and devote myself fully to the eating.

Janie, I ck'd out your picturetrail and I can't believe how creative you are! I wish I had 1/10 of your talent! Your stuff is beautiful. Marnie:)

Marnie,

I use to eat 5 meals a day,and never got hungry. But I needed a change,or maybe my body did, so went to this book and started eating three. When the meal is done, I'm not stuffed, and wouldn't want anyone to eat that way. Eat until you are comfortable, not full.

What is toxic hunger. I've never heard that term before. You are going to teach me something new. (love it).

What is spinerval w/o?

Thank you for your compliments, that is sweet.

You are a very interesting person.

>That is a great book!

Just wanted to clarify. I tried going vegetarian a few times in my life just mainly for health reasons ONLY. I can never go for longer than say 6 months like that and I crave meat again. But, I really did like this book.

Hi Janie,

Spinervals are workouts used with a spin bike. They are tough! I tried to find some references to toxic hunger. Here are some links on Dr. Fuhrmans website:http://drfuhrman.com/ask/archives/2005_01_03.aspx

http://drfuhrman.com/library/article4.aspx

Also, he discusses it briefly in "Eat to Live" in the section on hypoglycemia in Eat to Live Takes on Disease chapter.

He discusses it in more detail on page 137 of "Disease-Proof Your Child"

There is a large article in the member section of his website.
