Eat To Live Plan - success!!

SRP

Cathlete
It's official. I have exceeded my goal for weight loss by a half a pound! Total lost in about 3.5 months = 7.5 lbs. I was quite surprised and a little shocked to see that I had actually lost more than my goal... now I just need to figure out how to put on the brakes! The saddle bags are not totally gone, but I can live with that. I've been losing on the upper half of my body too, and I can't afford to lose more up there.

I followed a modified version of the ETL plan and have really enjoyed this new way of eating. It tastes great and is satisfying... now, how am I going to maintain my weight instead of losing, while still enjoying this nifty way of eating? I'll figure it out.

Anyhow, for those of you who are giving the ETL a try, keep it up. My weight loss started out very slow. In fact, I saw no change at all during the first few weeks. Then it was a slow, steady loss. It seemed to stop for a bit, but the next time I got on the scale, I'd met and exceeded my goal. I've never felt deprived, and in fact am quite sure I'm healthier than before because of all the nutrients I'm getting from the fresh veggies.

That's great, Shannon!

As for putting on the breaks, having a bit more healthy fats, and maybe some more dense foods (like sprouted grain breads) can.

One thing I don't agree with Furhman on is his "ideal weight" guidelines. And he's kind of a scrawny-looking dude on the back cover of his book! My "ideal weight, according to him is around 112-114 pounds. I did weight that once, after a 2 week juice fast followed by a light raw food diet, and I felt like I was 'too thin.'

Thanks, Kathryn and Karin!

Kathryn -
I agree about the "ideal weight." I'm not sure what mine is according to him... haven't read the book in a while. But I personally feel that I'd better not drop below 120. Right now I'm at 119.5, so I certainly don't want to lose more. That's where the shock factor came in. I can't remember the last time I was below 120.

I've started eating more breads and complex carbs, and I'm not as worried about the fats (healthy of course!). But I do like the idea of keeping fats, on average, to about 30% of my calories. I'm probably going to reduce the salads to side-salad size and add in more grains for the main part of the meal.

Awesome Shannon! Do you feel healthier as well? :)

I agree with Kathryn about the weight guidelines. Weight can be a subjective thing, especially if you have a lot of muscle. 120 might look scrawny on one woman and healthy on another. In any case, way to go!!!

Congrats on your weight loss Shannon!!! ETL is a great program, and got me on my Vegan way of eating!!...:)

I looked up Dr.Fuhrman's weight guidelines, and he'd have me weighing 111! I'd look pretty sickly at that weight.

Shelley, I don't want to weigh less than 120! That was an accident. Now I can eat more peanut butter to bring it back up a bit. ;-)

Shelley, I'm 5'4", medium frame. When I started ETL, I weighed 127 - very narrow on top, the extra down on my rump. My goal here was to get the stuff off my rump, which to some extent has worked. But I think I'm stuck with the rest of it!

Hi Ladies-
I had to chime in here because, I have also had success with a basic ETL approach. I have lost 13 pounds since mid March and in the recent weeks I can really see my muscles. Also, getting through MIC is not as hard as it used to be.( Note here: I have also been running 4 days per week consistently since Februrary) I guess all that HI/LO is easier with 13 less pounds to hall up and down.

Another postitve effect is that I really don't have the sweet tooth any more. And we have chocolates out in a dish here 24/7. They don't tempt me.

Shannon,

Congrats on your weight loss. I know that program is very healthy!

I gotta ask though....what do you do with your upper body/arms? You have great arms, full of muscle. What tapes do you do regularly, what do you think gave you those huge guns?? LOL:eek:

Great news Shannon and Judy. I looked at the book once, but I have such a hard time following anything regimented. Life keeps getting in the way. Shannon, I hope you can figure out how to put on the brakes and maintain. Maintaining a weight loss has always been my problem. I reach a goal for about 15 min, then use that as an excuse to eat whatever I want.

okay...I live under a rock...what book is this that you are talking of? ALL the weight I need to lose is in my but and upper thigh/hip area...thanks in advance from under my rock...Connie:p

Connie - the book we're talking about is "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.

Janice - thanks for the compliments on my arms! I think a lot of it is genetic. But I noticed real results from Pyramid Upper Body. I also use Muscle Endurance and make up my own routines quite a bit. The most I curl is a 50-lb barbell - that's my top weight, and go down from there, depending on what body part I'm working.

Sounds interesting! I'm reading SuperFoods Rx right now, and this way of eating sounds like a good way to implement eating the SuperFoods. What would his ideal weight be for someone who is 5'2" with a medium frame? I'm almost scared to find out.

Oh Shannon! I'm sorry I didn't see this until now. Wow! What an accomplishment! You look like a million bucks.

I wish I could have a slim mid-section like you do. My midsection tends to be all jiggly.

Way to go!! :D :D :D

I agree Shannon looks SUPER!! Nancy, if I could give my midsection I would! I like everything except from my navel to my midthigh....I wish I could get back to eating clean....I looked at ETL and was impressed with the solid nutrition he advocates, but sometimes I get so tired of being so careful. Does anyone else feel that way??? But then again, my energy level has not been up to par recently, and I know it is diet related!! Lynda I always use this site: http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/bmi.htm

to find BMI, ideal weight and all the numbers we don't always want to know. Take care all,

Donna
