easing back after low back pain

Hi Cathe -

I hope your recovery is coming along well. I can definitely sympathize, as I am on the mend from an injury too. I'm hoping you can give me some advice about beginning to strengthen my back and core after a low back injury.

Here's my story: after years of lower back problems, and 2 surgeries to fix them, I had totally gotten into exercising and went without injury for a year, even completing the Jan 2006 rotation (a huge accomplishment for this life-long couch potato!). But then I had a bad low back spasm (in the S-I region), and had to stop exercising for nearly 4 weeks while it very very very slowly healed. I have now gotten the OK from my PT and chiropracter to go walking, which I have been doing every other day for 2 weeks (I go about 1-2 miles). I've just started easing back to real workouts, beginning with the TimeSaver DVD (definitely lost my endurance in those 4 weeks). I can do the aerobics and even some of the upper body training. My question is about core exercises -- I know they are critical to keeping my back healthy, but I don't want to start with any exercises that will stress it out. Are there some of your core moves that you think might be easier on my back than others?

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. And thanks for being so motivating for me, both when you are at the top of your game in your videos and now as you recover. You are truly an inspiration!
