DVD recommendation for picky "poor" med student

Dear fellow exercisers,

ever since I discovered the high quality work-out videos of Cathe F., I have been looking for DVDs to add to my weekly exercise routine.
So far, I have purchased KM, MM, LIC, and the timesaver DVD, however, the only DVDs I truly like are LIC and timesaver. I don't like the high impact drills of KM, and I dread the strength training delivered on MM (as a matter of fact, I will sell both of them). I have been looking at some other workouts on Cathe´s website, but due to my limited budget and my preferences, I have spent too much time figuring out what to get, so I value your input. Here is a list of likes and dislikes to help you in your recommendations:
dislike: high impact (i.e. plyometrics such as knee tucks etc.)
moderate/heavy strength training
anything that takes up too much space
too much time involved in exercising (i.e. max 60-70 min)

like: step aerobis with diverse choreography
circuit workouts (i.e. both cardio and weights)
functional fitness workouts

I apologize for the rather lenghty entry, and I`m looking forward to your replies.

Sincerely, Elisabeth

RE: DVD recommendation for picky

Hi Elisabeth!

For low impact cardio, I would recommend Low Max. The entire workout is 70 minutes but there are four premixes ranging from 23 - 45 minutes. Choreography is moderately complex.

For circuit workouts, I would recommend High Step Challenge or High Step Training Advanced. HSC has an ab section. HSTA does not but has plenty of leg presses. Choreography is basic. HSC is 68 minutes and HSTA is 60 minutes. They both have shorter premixes.

For weight training, I would recommend the Gym Styles. This is a split series and all come in under an hour and have timesaver premixes which are about 35 minutes.

For an all around great series which incorporates cardio (basic and complex), strength, circuits, medium to heavy weights and two great ab routines, I would recommend the Four Day Split. These range from 60-70 minutes but also have 23 premixes which include four circuits. The cardio is two step routines (one low impact step, one high impact step (I think there's one blast you would have to leave out where you jump over the step from side to side). The kickbox is a great workout - the only high impact is jumping jacks which you could modify. Boot Camp has the most high impact. Even if the cardio is too much, it is worth it for the weight training alone.

For total body workouts, I would recommend Push/Pull-Supersets. These are 45 minute and 53 minute workouts, respectively and come with about 20 premixes. This is part of the Body Blast series which is the same series as the Timesaver workouts. Push Pull uses lighter weights but is more of a functional fitness workout because it uses the stability ball which makes the muscles work harder to stabilize.

HTH.

RE: DVD recommendation for picky

I absolutely second the Low Max suggestion, and I'd also suggest Body Max 2. It's long if done all together, but has great shorter premixes and the choreography is easy to pick up. It can be done straight cardio, circuit style or as a total body sculpt including abs. It's really versatile and well chaptered and not a space hog.

If you don't like heavy/moderate wt training, I don't know if you'll like gym styles or 4DS. Both have very intense wt workouts.

With LM & BM2 you'd get a lot of bang for your buck. Good luck!

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

RE: DVD recommendation for picky

I second the Low Max and Body Max 2 recommendation! Another one that you might enjoy is Cardio and Weights (it comes with Imax 2). CW is a cicruit workout and has a great ab section in it. Personally Imax 2 is my favourite interval cardio but it does have some high impact plyometrics. Another one that you may want to consider is Drill Max. It is a functional fitness workout and while it does require some space, you can modify the exercises for smaller space.

I hope this helps

Sorry I misread your post. Skip Gym Styles and 4DS. Instead I would go with Boot Camp/Muscle Endurance for a circuit and low weight, high rep workout. ME is about 68 mins. but there are shorter premixes. Boot Camp is 60 mins. and also has premixes. There are 8 cycles of cardio, lower body, upper body and core each lasting 1 minute.

RE: DVD recommendation for picky

I'd recommend Low Max, Body Max 2 which has alot of circuit style premixes, Rhythmic Step b/c it's the only Cathe step routine with more dancy/intricate choreography. Step Blast/Step Jump and Pump which has tons of premixes (I skip the hi-lo b/c of the impact which really doesnt take away from the rest of the workout/premixes whatsoever), Bootcamp/Muscle Endurance (though BC has a few higher impact cardio drills).

I'm a med school grad. I managed to keep the weight off during med school but gained it all during residency...go figure!

RE: DVD recommendation for picky

BM2 is my favorite circuit workout and it has great premixes!
Step, Jump and Pump is also a fun workout but the 'jump' part might contain some higher impact moves (I can't recall at the moment)...it comes with Step Blast which is an all step workout with some of that diverse choreography you're looking for. The premixes on this dvd are plentiful and also contain 'workout blenders' which mix the two workouts...you gotta love Cathe's premixes!
