dvd problems (again, sorry)

Hello. I am having a problem playing my one and only Cathe DVD. The DVD and the DVD player each worked perfectly fine for a while when I first got them, which was at the same time. Now the Cathe DVD freezes. I tried cleaning it with Lemon Pledge. It didn't help.

What is frustrating to me is that my Cathe DVD plays fine in my upstairs DVD player but freezes in the downstairs (new) player where I have my gym. To add to the dilemma, a different DVD of my daughters plays just fine in the downstairs DVD player where the Cathe one freezes.

I want to buy new Cathe DVD's but can't see the point if they aren't going to play. And if the player is the problem, why does the other DVD play?

The reason I don't just switch players is bc the downstairs player also plays VHS which is what the rest of my near complete Cathe collection is composed of.

Any ideas? TIA!

Two thoughts,

The head of the dvd player is dirty, Radio shack has a cd/dvd head cleaning disk.

The dvd is dirty... now dirtier with lemon pledge.
Wash the dvd with windex and a soft clean terry cloth rag. Go across the rag do NOT use circular motions, a small horizontal scratch will not affect the play , a circular scratch will.

This happens to me too. It is usually the same few discs. I clean my DVD player and it works again. I know it needs cleaned when it says "disc error" or it just freezes up. Sometimes I have to clean the player a couple of times to get it to play the disc. I clean my player once a week just for maintenance.

I'm like you that my workout player is a VHS/DVD combo and not as hi-tech as the one in our living room. Anything and everything plays on our big one but not on my workout player.

Where is it freezing? Is it in the premixes? Does it play if you push the button to move to the next chapter? That fixes mine. However like the other posters said, it could be you player needs to be cleaned. I have this problem with a couple of other DVD's (non-Cathe) as well.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, after having cleaned the disk with windex and the player with some commercial cleaning disk it is still not working. It either says "unknown disc" or "bad disc" from the get go, or it freezes about 1 1/2 minutes into whatever chapter I play. (Forgive me for probably not using the proper terminology here. I am new to DVD use and lingo.)

However, I did just notice one of the posters mentioned she has to clean her player several times before it works. So I guess I'll try cleaning it a few more times.

This is discouraging bc I enjoyed my Cathe dvd and its great flexibility for a few weeks. I really want to get more of the new Cathe dvds but won't if I am going to have such problems. I hate to seem so "backwards" but the VHS system is so hassle free.

If for some reason the dvd has becomes scratched, you can repair it using a DR DVD or DR CD scratch removal tool.

Another option is taking it to a video rental store, some of them have a dvd polishing machine and charge a nominal fee for scratch removal.

It could.

Technical reason (excuse) to follow.

The head of a dvd player is a laser that shines right at the the dvd disc and a receiver that senses the reflected light coming back.

When a dvd is scratched, the light path is interrupted or possibly muted. If one dvd player's head was more sensitive (able to work with a lower reflected light) it could very well work with the scratched dvd disc.

I work on computer dvd and cd drives occasionally I've had to take them apart to clean them with a Qtip. The disc style cleaners are good and work most of the time. Does the dvd player that refuses to work with the Cathe dvd work for every dvd in the house? If its only that one dvd disc, I'd say you had a disc problem.

Either that or the problematic dvd player is a Richard Simmons fan.

Thanks. The dvd player that won't play my only Cathe dvd does play my only other (Baby Einstein) dvd. I think I should just take the player back and get a better one. Problem is that it worked for a month or so, and I am not sure I have the stuff (box, receipt) to take it back. Very stupid on my part.
