DVD Player That Can Handle Cathe's Premixes

Cathlete
I need a new DVD player. The Sony SLV-D360P DVD/VCR combo player that I just bought cannot handle Cathe’s premixes. Specifically, it freezes during the High Step Training premixes. The High Step Training DVD is brand new and clean with no scratches. The DVD plays fine on my computer (including all the premixes), but my computer is not in my workout area. I still have time to return this DVD/VCR combo player. I do not want to be a serial returner, and I would appreciate suggestions for brands and models that can handle Cathe’s premixes (especially the more demanding ones like the Body Blasts). I still have a relatively new RCA VCR that works fine, so I do not really need a combo player. I am open to buying a separate DVD player if that will work better. The VCR side of this Sony player randomly ejects videos in the middle of the night too, and I am careful to turn it off before I go to bed. I think it is possessed! I am buying this specifically for Cathe’s workouts and do not need anything fancy. I just want something that will play her premixes! I have most of her workouts on VHS, and that is the main reason I want to upgrade to DVD. By the way, I learned today that the model I just bought has been replaced this week by the new SLV-370P model. Do you think it would be any better?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Blessings,
Heather B.

I have a cheap combo DVD/VCR player that I got from Wal Mart as well and it works fine with all of Cathe's DVD's and the premixes. You may just have a defective player. Mine is made by Emerson but its a piece of crap. I hate it but it does work well with her DVD's.

My dvd player that seems to play everything was a freebie from the satellite company for installing a dish. It's an Apex...so I guess another cheapie:)

Hi Heather,
Why don't you take a couple of Cathe's DVDs with you and try them out in one of the players? That should let you know for sure whether they'll play or not.
There are just so many brands and models out there now. I have a Toshiba 5 disc player that must be over 5 years old, and I've never had any trouble with it, but I'm sure they don't make it anymore... I also have a JVC ( the remote is right here next to me, and the numbers on it are RM-SXV038J) that works too.

Good luck :)

Heather, i have a Sony DVP NC875v. It's a 5 disc player CD/DVD that I bought maybe 3 yrs ago, and I love it.It remembers where you stopped on your disk. That means you can set it to start exactly where you want so you don't have to be fumbling and waiting when you WO. I pick out what I need for my rotation and load the 1st five discs and their starting points.I think I bought it at Best Buy.When I first tried to buy it they were out of stock and I had to wait, but it was worth it! I can't remember the price, but I don't think it was more than 150. Good Luck.

Finding a DVD Player for Cathe's Premixes

After doing a lot of research and talking to the guys at Best Buy and Sears, I learned that the Sony combo player is a hunk of junk. No kidding! Everyone recommends the Sony standalone player as the best by far. The multi-disc player has an excellent reputation as well. The guy at Sears told me that most combo players (not just the Sony one) are made from surplus parts and are not well designed. He recommended having a separate VCR because some DVDs will not play in combo players for copyright reasons. Some of the Ya Yas have had the same problems with Cathe’s premixes playing on the Sony combo player.

I bought a new Sony DVD player Monday after work that was better than the Sony combo player I had, but it still acted nutty during Cathe’s premixes. It did not freeze, but Cathe would shake wildly during the transition from one segment to the next one. Thinking I bought a defective one, I returned to Target and bought yet another one that did the exact same thing. I pulled out my old VCR, and I was ready to toss the DVDs out the window and return to VHS! Having the premixes is one of the main reasons I was excited to upgrade to DVD.

I ended up with a Sony DVP-NS55P standalone DVD player, and I love it even though the High Step Training premixes are a little fussy. I can live with that. At least this DVD player does not freeze like the combo player did. Cathe just shakes for a few seconds while it is switching to the next segment. The workout “as is” plays just fine. I tested the Body Blast Timesaver DVD, and it works too. Even the blender works. I also tested my FIRM Super Cardio Mix DVD, which also works with the programmable option. None of these features worked right on the Sony combo player. This new DVD player has a multi-disc resume feature that makes it act like a multi-disc player. I do not know how it works, but it resumes playing the last 6 DVDs where I stopped. I can cue up 6 DVDs tonight, turn off the player overnight, and tomorrow morning it will start playing at those points when each DVD is loaded (unless I want it to start playing from the beginning). It does not involve any programming either. I just stop the DVD where I want it to start tomorrow, take it out, and do the same thing with the next one. I am fascinated by this. Even if I do not play the DVDs in the same order again, it still remembers where to resume playing each one. High Step Training still plays better on my computer, but I decided that I would deal with Cathe shaking for a few seconds on these premixes and choose to be amused by it! :7

I went to the Vitamin Shoppe during my lunch hour today and decided to visit Best Buy while I was in the area. On a whim, I bought an inexpensive RCA compact DVD player (the kind that is half the size of a standard DVD player) and was delighted to discover that it plays Cathe’s High Step Training premixes with no glitches and with smooth transitions between the segments. :) It does not have the nice features of my more expensive Sony DVD player, but it works for this. Now I have a DVD player just for High Step Training premixes. I need to work the premixes into my rotation now. ;-) I am keeping the Sony standalone DVD player that I bought Monday night because I love all the great features and the excellent picture quality and sound. Now I have a VCR and 2 DVD players in my workout area just for Cathe! Maybe I really do need an intervention! ;-)

Blessings,
Heather B.

RE: Finding a DVD Player for Cathe's Premixes

If I had seen your post before you went shopping again, I would have recommended you to go Target and get a Samsung combo player. I have two of them because after I bought and used the first one for awhile, I loved it so much because every dvd/vhs I put in it it played flawlessly. So, common sense dictated I needed to get two. I hated having to have two players on each t.v....a dvd player and a vhs player. The combo player's are the way to go for now...until the technology advances beyond dvd's and we're on to some new format.

Now, I am still on the look out for a multi-disk player so I can do mish-moshing easier.
