DVD "freezing" issues...

SirenSongWoman

Cathlete
I read the DVD School bulletin but have to ask why it is I only have "frozen" image/sound issues with Cathe dvd's? No trouble with The Firm, Karen Voight, Winsor Pilates, etc. I read something here about the problem with Cathe dvd's being caused by "layering." I don't know what "layering" is but if it creates such problems why is it done? I love and need my Cathe workouts for all the reasons everyone here loves and needs their Cathe workouts. Nonetheless, this is nuts. I'm exhausted from having to constantly stop mid-workout, while my heart is racing full-throttle, to fast-forward until I reach an "un-frozen" section. Lord knows what I'm missing. It's a wet towel on my workout.

The most recently produced Cathe dvd's I own are from the 2005 Hardcore Series so perhaps the problem has been fixed since those workoouts were produced (Anyone)?. At any rate, I'm going to try all the problem dvd's (most every Cathe disk I own from 2006 and prior) on a different dvd player to see if maybe the problem might be resolved with the purchase of a new machine. But I really shouldn't have to buy a brand new dvd player just to meet the special demands of Cathe dvd's.

Please advise.

RE: DVD

There can be numerous reasons for your problems. But first, so you know, our DVDs don't require a special player. In fact, there is only one type of DVD player sold (excluding hi-def players), called DVD Video --- and all the brands have to meet the specs of DVD Video to use the label. It is impossibe to purchase a special player to play our DVDs because there is no such thing and thus we would never require a customer to do so.

So why are you having problems with a Cathe DVD and not your other DVDs? Well, it is impossible to say without seeing the disc and without running some test on your current player and other players. But here are some possible causes: #1 a dirty DVD player lens - this will affect different discs differently. Some disc may play fine while others will not. You have critical data and non-critical data on a disc. If critical data is in a spot affected by the dirty lens the disc will have an error. A laser lens cleaning kit can solve this problem #2 a dirty disc - a large percentage of skips are caused by a dirty disc. Simply cleaning the disc really well will solve a large percentage of problems. It is also worth purchasing a disc cleaning kit from your local electronics store as polishing a disc will greatly improve all of your disc playing experiences including audio discs. #3 firmware issues - this is a tougher one to solve. A Cathe DVD has many more features than just about any DVD sold on the market. The more features, the more chances of a problem. There is no such thing as a DVD that will play on every player made without at least one problem. Still, even with our DVDs there should only be a problem playing premixes on some players. The normal program should play just fine on any player as long as the disc has not been damaged or is dirty.

Anytime you have multiple problems with different discs you should always test the discs on another player if possible. A bad disc will not play on any player and this will really help you and us to isolate the problem. If you need further assistance please contact customer support at [email protected]

RE: DVD

Sirensongwoman,

That's odd to hear that you are having so many issues with your Cathe dvds. I have purchased several of her older and quite a few of her newer workouts without any issues. The only time I did have a problem was with the PUB/PLB. I had just purchased it and it made a loud grinding sound before it would play. I then replaced the dvd player (which was needed) and haven't had a problem since.

It sounds like you were given some great advice from the people at SNM so hopefully you will get to the bottom of it.

Good luck!
Annette

RE: DVD

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly (and thank you to the other responder, also).

The critical remark in your response is "a Cathe DVD has many more features... the more features, the more chances of a problem." Maybe the combination of all the extra features and playing the dvd's on the older dvd player located in my "gym" is the reason I only have trouble with Cathe dvd's. Since I take very good care of all my things (especially my workout dvd's, which I rely on every day) and have had trouble with some Cathe dvds right out of the package, and since nobody else seems to be having this problem, that has to be it. I rotate so many Cathe dvd's it may take awhile but I'm going to start dealing with a problem dvd as the problem arises. I'll start by playing each one on a different player. If that works I'll either switch my players or get a new one for my "gym (it's my dining room!)". If I still have problems I'll hit your recommendations step-by-step, doing everything you suggest because I need and use my Cathe workouts more than all my others and these problems are making me nuts. At any rate, I'll keep you posted - pro or con.

Thanks

RE: DVD

I just had freezing on a brand new Shivea Rhea yoga video, and was surprised because I never had any freezing except with the last Cathe DVD's that were replaced. I pulled the DVD out, looked at the back, and sure enought there was a tiny smudge on it. I wiped it down with a soft cloth, put it back in, and no more freezing. DVD players are extremely sensitive to dirt and smudges and scratches.

RE: DVD

I seem to have this problem a lot and it is so frustrating!. I clean the discs and the player without any improvement. My Chest & triceps dvd could not even be read in my player. A friend, also addicted to Cathe, tried it and had no problems. We exchanged dvds and hers worked in my player. I was so excited! I just don't get it. I even have some Cathe dvds that have worked but will not work the next time I use it. I clean it and it still does not work. What is the real answer to these problems?

RE: DVD

I once had trouble w/freezing or trouble loading and they also only happened w/certain dvd's. But when I put them in another dvd player they worked fine. It may just be your dvd player itself. Not sure why this was happening but since I have switched I no longer have any problems.

RE: DVD

I'd like to know the answer to this question too. I have Sony DVD players (2 of the same kind). It's not like they're a no-name brand! I don't mind purchasing a new dvd player, but I'd like to know which one to buy as well so I don't run into these problems.
Thanks,
Paula

RE: DVD

I also have a Sony dvd player that is acting up. It seems strange to say don't get a sony but is there something to this? I have looked back over some previous threads on the subject and Sony has been implicated before. Not sure what to buy. Please help us!
Thanks, Lee

RE: DVD

I tried my dvd's that were "freezing" on my only other dvd player and they played great. I guess my Sony's were/are the problem! What's funny is that the player that works great is a Cyberhome - VERY cheap dvd player!!!! Oh well, I guess sometimes you DON'T get what you pay for...

RE: DVD

I cleaned the heck out of everything: the player, the dvd's (some brand new, straight out of the packaging) and still had trouble with them on my Sansui vcr/dvd player. But when I tried those same dvd's on my (newer) Panasonic vcr/dvd player I had no problems. I hope I haven't jinxed it. The Sansui machine still plays everything else (other workout brands, movies, etc.), though. I don't get it but i'm glad to not have to deal with "freezing" anymore. When a 2/2 count becomes 4/4 and a 4/4 count becomes 8/8... talk about "challenge." Ouch!

RE: DVD

I've heard lots of bad things about Sony but, since I always buy cheap, I've not experienced this myself. Panasonic products have always worked for me and I know a lot of people who swear by Toshiba. What constitutes "old" in electronics could be something you bought last year. My 10 year old Sansui player would be considered ancient...

RE: DVD

I just received KPC and on my brand new HP DVD readable computer the DVD froze...on my DVD player downstairs works fine. I thought of your post when it happened and almost cried. I don't know why but you are not alone... duck

RE: DVD

I used to have a Toshiba multi-region DVD player and I loved it. My Cathe DVD played beautifully on that one. Mind you, back then I had only the earlier workouts like MIS, Rythmic Step and Pure Strength, Slow & Heavy DVDs. Then my DVD got stolen when my flat was broken into. I really miss that DVD player.

RE: DVD

I use all of my workouts on our Sony pc (just due to the way our family room is set up) and I have only had issues with BC/ME DVD. It freezes up and I can't use it at all. It works on my Sony DVD player hooked up to the TV though.
