Dumbells in place of Barbells

Hi,

Thank you for your excellent fitness programs. My question is, since I don't have a barbell, can dumbells be substituted and used in the same postitons, in the excercises where you use a barbell?

Thank you :)

I do not have a barbell too. I only use dumbellss and I do all the exercises as cathe does except the deadlifts because I have lordosis in my lower back.I can not used the weight that cathe used yet}( and now the dumbells are enough for me.I discovered cathe 4 months ago.My strenght is growing.Maybe when the dumbells won't be a challenge I will decide to buy a barbell.

I primarily use dumbells. I just got a barbell becasue I did need it for squats. I needed to go up in weight and didn't want to buy another set of dumbells. I think you can substitute just fine.

Hi - you definitely can use dumbbells in place of a barbell, I did it for quite a while. I had used my husbands barbell for about 2 years. Then I got pregnant and when my belly got too big, I had to switch to dumbells when I was doing the rows. When I started lifting again, I stopped using the barbell altogether because it was just a hassle taking my husbands weights off.

I just bought my own Troy barbell set a couple weeks ago and I really like it better than just using the dumbells. Especially for squats. I had been holding the dumbells on my shoulders, but the heavier ones kind of dug in. You're going to advance very quickly in the weights you use for squats and you'll find that you're dumbells may be too heavy to hold in your hands (or on your shoulders as I had been doing) and you'll want the barbell.

The Troy set was about $90 with shipping, but you can get much less expensive ones at Walmart. I just liked the rubber encasing and the quick-change ability of the Troy set.

I can't find all the parts of our barbell...they're buried in our garage somewhere:) So I use my dumbells. When the sculpting stick came out I noticed that I had problems handling it when across my shoulders...right elbow is messed up with due to a break that mended a little out of whack and I can't bend it right or comfortably. So far I do just fine with up to 15# dumbells on my shoulders; don't know what I'll do if I ever need to go heavier though.

I used dumbells for years and then last year bought the troy lite!! LOVE IT:) Wish I had bought it years ago!! I really can go a lot heavier with lunges and squats.

Thank you for your response...

I just started with Cathe...this was my second session and I am so pleased that I found her. Congratulations that you strength is growing...enjoy!

Thank you for your reply...

I can understand your not wanting to buy another set of weights...when I get "there" I may do the same...it is good to know that I can use the dumbells for now...Thanks...

Hope you enjoy your new barbell!

Thank you so much for your reply...

I was concerned about putting the dumbells on my shoulders...but I am still using very light weights so until I get stronger, I think I will use what I have. I am going to check out the Troy barbells for future use. Thanks for letting me know about them.

Congratulations on continuing your workout....and I hope you enjoy your new barbell set!....Way to Go!

Hi, Thanks for the reply...

I just started with Cathe...and I don't know about the "sculpting stick"...what is that?

Hopefully your elbow will heal some more so when you have to go up in weights you can do so comfortably...

Thanks again

WOW...thanks for the great information...I never thought about that it may be possible to go further with the barbell. I am just a beginner so I have a ways to go before I reach the limits of the dumbells I have...but I am going to check out the Troy Lite...glad that you love it...have fun!

I believe the sculpting stick she was referring to is the gadget that came with the Firm's Body Sculpting System 2 that came out about 18months ago. It weighs 8lbs and it has "twigs" at each end that are removable and weigh about 2lbs each.

Hope this infor helps!

take care:)

Thanks Glogal...

It sounds very interesting. I can't seem to find the Firm Body Sculpting System 2 on this website though. There are so many ways to get fit and strong here...it is exciting!

I am so glad I found Cathe's videos. They really are challenging for me and that makes them fun. I know I need persistance and patience to get to where I want to be.

Thank you for the information.

Enjoy!

If I'm to lazy to get my bar out from the corner and get it all set up, I'll use dumbells for Cathe.

Thank you everyone...it is good to know that I can use the dumbells.

Good luck to everyone...and have fun on your fitness journeys.

Thank you so much NicoleP!

It is really great seeing so many people supporting each other on their fitness journeys. This really is a "Wonderful World of Cathe"! I enjoyed my workout today. I got a stability ball and it was so much fun to use...and challenging too...Cool!...All of you make this so much fun...it is motivating to be responded to.

Have a wonderful day! :)
