Dumbbell position for squats?

I don't have a barbell (the troy lite one is on my wish list!) so I use dumbbells for squats. Does it makes a difference where you hold the weights (on shoulders vs. w/ arms hanging at sides)? Is the "on shoulders" position more effective for engaging the glutes? TIA!

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

When I use dumbbells, I rest them lengthwise on my shoulders & hold them with my hands. It's the most comfortable position for me to engage the legs properly.

It's not denial. I'm just selective about the reality I accept.

I can never hold dumbells 'on' my shoulders: it hurts! Instead, I hold them almost like at the top of a hammer curl position, with the ends near the front of my shoulders.

I agree that it doesn't really matter where you hold them, as long as it is comfortable for you. One thing to watch for in the arms-by-the-sides position is a possible tendency to round the back.

I put a towel around my shoulders, and rest them on my shoulders. I am only using 8 or 10# so they aren't uncomfortable to me.

I want the Troy Lite too... Maybe Santa Claus will bring it to me!

Katie, that's a really good idea! I'll have to do that.

The Troy Lite is also on my wish list. Right now I have the Danskin one from Walmart and while it serves my purpose right now, it is my goal to be able to use more weight than that! I will be getting my tuition refund (leftover loan funds after tuition&fees are taken out) in several weeks and I budgeted the money for one! Oooh, can't wait!

Thank you to everyone for answering my question! Kathryn, thanks also for the form safety tip re: potential for rounding the back when holding arms at sides.
