Dumb question,.....I am sure to all you seasoned weight...

Cathlete
Hi since I am relatively new to Cathe and the heavier weights that come with doing her tapes, I have a question about barbells. I have been looking at purchasing a barbell and some weights for it either in a set or by themselves. I am being told that a 5 ft bar weighs 14 pounds all by itself. So my question is when Cathe says she is using a barbell set with 40 pounds of weight is that including the weight of the bar itself or is that on top of the weight of the bar making it actually be 54 pounds of weight. I am kinda confused. Because to be honest the bar alone might be just enough weight on some of the exercises that she does.

I am sorry if this seems trivial or novice, but I really don't want to be overwhelmed with weights plus the weight of the bar itself. Right now I am using dumbbells for all the exercises in Power Hour which is the only weights tape I have at the moment. I am looking at possibly purchasing MIS in the near future. I have dumbbells from 3 pounds up to 15 pounds.

Thanks for all the help you educated gals can provide.

God bless you all!!

Annette

Hi Annette,

When Cathe says she is using a 40 lb bar, she means total--bar & plates.

Check out Sports Authority or D*ck's Sporting Goods. They usually have 110 lb sets for about $40 to $50.

Good luck!

Don't apologize! Cathe's bar in MIS weighs 15 lbs. So when she says "I'll be using a 35# barbell" that means she has (2) 10# plates on there. I suggest getting a 5' bar so you can use it for calf raises and t-bar rows. I have a 3' bar and find that I don't use it as much. Hope this helps!

Annette-
Yup, the stated weight always includes the bar too.

I have been loving my Troy Lite barbell set. The barbell is 4' for which seems to me to be perfect for everything. I LOVE that all the plates are coated in black rubber. This is the set that Cathe uses on a few of the workouts. I think it's a great deal at Fitness1st.com. The maximum you can go with this barbell is 80 lbs., though. For me that's more than I'll ever use! The barbell itself weighs only 5 lbs., which I also love. Check it out and have fun!!

Nancy,
Thanks for the info on fitness1st.com I've seen the Troy system elsewhere for the same price, but $10 more shipping. AND I was SO HAPPY to see that they offer 1.25# plates. I just picked up some new weights (this makes my 4th bar, but they all have different purposes!).

Troy Lite!

Seconding the Troy lite set! It is great with the rubber plates. But, my bar is 54" long, not 4 foot. Nancy, are you sure yours is 4'? That was the reason for my getting it because my other barbell is only 4' long and sometimes it made my grip just a tad bit too narrow to be comfortable. LOVE my Troy set! My hubby hears me say that every time I use it!!:7

RE: Troy Lite!

Debbie-

I stand corrected!! It is 54"! Which is 4.5 feet. Don't know where I got the 4 feet from. I just totally love that set. The length is just right, and so is everything else about it!

>What do you do with your 4 different barbells kathryn?

You mean, beside collect them?? :)
The three I already have (not including my 12# body bar) are a 5'straight bar (which I use for most lower body work), a 4'padded bar from the Firm (which I use for some upper body work) and an EZ-curl bar (which I use for bicep curls, and sometimes for lying tricep extentions, but my EZ-curl bar seems extra "curly" and not quite as good a fit for tricep exercises).

I'm planning to use all my bars together, more or less, so that I don't have to change weights so often, and can use weight changing time more effectively for stretching. On some exercises where I want to go up in weight, I might also have two bars loaded: one at 5-10# less than the other. I'll start with the heavy bar, then when I can't do anymore reps in good form, I'll go down to the lighter weight (which would be the weight that I now use for the exercise).

I actually bought the Troy set mostly for the plates. I have a few rubber-coated plates that came with my Soloflex Rockit, and I love them: no rust problems like with my all-metal weights, and they're easier on the hands (they have a nice rim to grab on to) and the floor (no scratching). The Soloflex plates by themselves are ridiculously expensive: $60 for a 10# pair (or was it 20#, but still...)which includes shipping.

Troy Lite

I love my Troy barbell too. I ordered the pair of 10# plates at the same time and am so glad I did - makes changing so much easier.

Firm padded barbell

Kathyrn,
Where did you buy your Firm padded barbell? I know firmdirect no longer sells them. I was wondering if they were available through another distributor or was then a Firm exclusive barbell? Thanks in advance.

RE: Firm padded barbell

Jilliana,
I got it several years ago from Firm direct. If they don't have it anymore, then I doubt it's available anywhere.

I got a padded barbell at http://www.orthotechsports.com/
I love it! The bar itself is 10lbs. You do unfortunatly have to buy the collars, plates, and barbell seperate. The shipping is a little high, but what do you expect when shipping a barbell and plates!

Nancy,

Can you use regular plates with that bar? I was thinking about getting a second bar, but already have some plates I'd like to use in addition to whatever comes with the set.

Thanks!
