Dumb Question about Soy Burgers, etc.

Okay- feeling a bit stupid here, but I've searched online and still couldn't figure this one out. There are so many soy foods that taste like "meat foods" (Boca burgers, tofurkey, fake bacon). How do they make the soy versions taste so much like the real thing? Is it just that they've discovered the perfect combo of seasonings?

TIA!@!!

Hi Gina! I have NO IDEA! Just saw you down here all by your lonely self and thought I'd shout out a BIG HELLLOOO! Good Luck with your search! (BTW, just cam across your Christmas card yesterday sorting thru all our stuff as we are preparing to move in two weeks. That was so sweet of you to remember us!)

I think in additon to the flavor, it's the texture they must nail to get it right. Have you tried Quorn products. They are made from fungus and my daughter loves them. They taste like chicken, what else? and can be flavored accordingly. I haven't tried the beef type products because I haven't found them yet but it's nice to find a product she likes, Miss Picky Britches!

Isn't Debbie wonderful?

Gardenburger Riblets are the best most meatlike thing I know of. They are in a BBQ sauce and have great texture. I LOVE them on a baked sweet potato.

I just have to put in another vote for Gardenburger Riblets - they are fantastic!!:9

They are high in protein also.

I use Gimme Lean soy sausage and I'd definitely say it's the seasonings. This stuff is pretty good. The only major difference that I really notice is that it's drier than meat sausage.

BTW - The Gimme Lean play on "Jimmy Dean" really cracks DH up.

I think alot of people don't realize that most meat doesn't really have a flavor-they like the taste of the seasonings, breading, or oil/sauces it is cooked in. Tofu, Soy, Seitan, Tempeh-all have the texture of meat and when cooked in the same spices, tastes (sometimes) exactly like the real thing, without the fat, calories, cholesterol, etc!

I am going to have to try the riblets! It is very odd, I know, but I have a tendancy to not get the meatless meat products which are among the ones in the categroy of meat products I would not and won't eat. I bypass the ham deli slices, hot dogs, and would never think to buy riblest because ribs are gross to me! :) The one exception is veggie bacon because I love VLT's!
