dragged my bread machine out of the cellar

i got sick of seeing HFCS in every loaf of bread in the supermarket, so I've dragged my bread machine up from the cellar and am now making a loaf of rosemary/olive oil bread. Just have to wait 3 1/2 hours now! If it comes out, I'm going to start using it more often, cuz I hate HFCS in everything!!!!

How ironic! I have a loaf baking in mine as we speak. Ditto on all the junk in bread these days. There is nothing better than fresh baked bread.

I bake almost all of the bread that I eat, but finally got tired of the bread machine on the counter. I make it the old fashioned way and it's great.

I did an experiment with the potato bread that my husband likes and put it in a bag to see how long it would take to mold. After a month still no mold. What does that say! There's just way too much garbage in the bread these days.

MMMMM...the smell of fresh-baked bread!
(Do you have a bread machine with a timer? Then you can set it to be a sort of 'alarm clock,' so that the bread starts working in the middle of the night, and it's ready in the morning).

I think fresh bread is so much better than any store-bought bread (even the whole-sprouted-grain breads, which are pretty much the only ones I buy...and they have no HFCS in, just sprouted grains and lentils, yeast, and and salt).

Even better than bread machine bread, IMO, is home-made kneaded-by-hand bread, but who has the time anymore to do that? It's a complete sensory experience: the taste, the smell, even the feel of the dough (and is a pretty good workout for the hands and forearms!).

Have fun baking!

I don't think they should call most of this stuff 'bread' anymore!

I once bought a loaf of Baker's Inn bread (why, I don't know, because I really don't eat much bread, and when I do, it's usually the sprouted grain type...maybe the health food store was closed? Though yesterday, I found the sprouted grain bread in my regular grocery store....hidden in the freezer, amongst the frozen garlic bread...an area I usually never check out, WTH?) and it looked fairly all right as far as grocery-store bread goes.

I had one or two slices, but decided it was too doughy and not really 'whole grain' seeming to me. I left it in the fridge, thinking maybe I'd eat more, and forgot about it. It got pushed to the back. When I finally cleaned my fridge (3 MONTHS later!...yes, I know, I need to get to that more often, perhaps!), I took out the bread, thinking I'd have a moldy mess to add to my compost pile. It was a bit dried out, but there was NOT ONE SPOT of mold on it! Scary! If even bacteria don't want to eat it, how is our body supposed to break it down (which it does with the help of our internal bacteria)? (Reminded me of the special features on thë "Super Size Me" DVD, where an experiment shows that McDonald's fries stay about the same for weeks, whereas regular fries and burgers go bad long before.)

Yes, you can make any kind of bread in the machine...at least any kind that I know of:) and Kathryn, you are so right, the whole experience of kneading, etc is wonderful, but, right, with the whole time thing, my machine gets a good workout. This bread will go stale quicker, but then again, there are no preservatives! I love using my bread machine.

I bought a bread machine last month and I love it. I make about 1-2 loaves a week and also use it for dough for pizza. I wish that I would've bought it sooner!

I love the timer feature. I can get my mix ready in the morning, set the timer, and I have fresh bread to have w/dinner when I get home from work. :) And the house smells great too.

Oh, the timer feature is great, but be careful! Once I used it, and dont know why exactly this happened, but came home to the whole machine on the floor! Guess it waltzed across the counter. Now I put heavy books in front of it:eek:

I got mine out of it's hiding place a few weeks ago and have been making a loaf every few days.

I have pumpernickle in there right now!:9

Yes, mine moves around too, so I just make sure something is in front of it to keep it from going TOO far!

Delfin...how did that rosemary/olive oil bread turn out? I ended up using my bread machine the other day and the plastic hinges on the door broke so DH super glued them (it's 10 years old, after all) and then we got online and he researched what the best one out there is and he ordered me a brand new one. Awww...

Okay, how about some recipes to entice me to lug mine up from the basement. I have no idea where the manual is, and that's where I used to get my recipes.

Hi Lynda,

I don't think I ever used a recipe out of my manual. I purchased The Bread Machine Cookbook. You can get them used from Amazon for a couple of dollars. I have that one and another one (I don't know if it's II or V or what and I'm at work - working hard - so I can't check :)). I've used my books so much they're falling apart! Anyway, try this link - it's kinda long so I hope it works:

Hi Kathryn,
I have never owned a bread machine nor made bread before! Thanks so much for the website.
Thanks again! Belinda:)

I can sure understand wanting to leave that horrible stuff out of my bread as well. I haven't bought a loaf of bread from the store in years and years. I make my own, by hand. It is a great workout for the arms. I bake whole wheat sourdough bread. Don't have to buy any yeast at all, and I know when I do use my cultures, it works every time.

My DH loves this as well, and it is so healthy for you.

The rosemary/olive oil loaf turned out yummy.... as did a flax seed loaf I just made today. Here are the recipes:

Rosemary one:
1 cup water
3 Tbsp olive oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp italian seasoning
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 Tbsp dried rosemary
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast

Flax seed one:
1 1/3 cups water
2 Tbsp canola oil
3 Tbsp honey
1 1/2 cups white bread flour
1 1/3 cups whole wheat bread flour (Ijust used regular whole wheat)
1/2 cup flax seed, coursly ground
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp active dry yeast

For both, add the ingredients according to your bread machine directions. (Mine, I always add wet first) Select the white bread cycle. The flax loaf is a large one.

enjoy!!!:9
