Down Pyramids with STS?

I don't have plate mates, or weighted gloves or any of those things that would allow me to micro-manage my weight selection to match a percentage of 1RM for STS. So what I've been doing sometimes is a bit of down pyramiding- I start at the highest weight I think I can manage for a few reps, then when I reach failure I go down to the next weight I have available. It allows me to really challenge myself, and I think build muscle. I think so, anyway- but what do other people think of how I am doing this?

I'd be interested in opinions on this as well. I sort of have to do the same thing on a couple of exercises for the same reason. I do have the gloves, so that has helped, but I'm pretty much to a point where they are not enough, but I don't really have another piece of equipment either. I'm hoping the weighted vest will help this conundrum when it comes to lower body - but I still am not sure how to up the weight for biceps without jumping from say 16 lb to 20 and still complete all reps (don't have a barbell yet).
