Don't want to steal Susan's thunder, but......

Sheila

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know that "tchersue's" little guy, well not so.... he was way over 9 pounds.... was delivered by C-Section yesterday. I don't know a lot of the details because I got the message from another one of my instructors. When I find out more, I will let you all know. Knowing her she'll be back on the forum before long! I am very proud of Susan and her wealth of knowledge. Her answers are so thorough that there is nothing left for me to say!

FYI.... we are holding the "Healthy Moms Perinatal Fitness Instructor Training and Certification Course" in the Orlando area on June 22. Please contact me via email at [email protected] if you are interested in attending. There is definitely a need for trained individuals out there who can help me in my "crusade" to debunk the "myth of the delicate condition."

Thanks Sheila!

Thanks for the wonderful news! Looking forward to hearing more details from you or Susan!
And Congratulations to Susan and her family!

RE: Thanks Sheila!

Thank you, Sheila, for updating us. Tht's wonderful news! I suppose with a baby that big, a c-section may be the only way to deliver! Congrats, Susan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YEAH!! Congratulations!

Susan, when you read this, congratulations on your new baby!! I can't wait to hear the details!

BTW, for anyone who might be freaked by the 9 lb + birthweight, that weight doesn't necessarily require a C section. I'm sure there were other factors that contributed to the need. I delivered my 9 + lber naturally, and it was actually an easier delivery than when I had my 8 1/2 lber. A lot of different issues determine the path your labor and delivery take. And remember, as long as you have a healthy baby at the end, you're a winner! :) ( I just thought I'd throw that in in case someone who already knows their little one is approaching the "huge" designation mifght start letting their mind run wild. ;-) )

Thanks for letting us know, Shelia!

Big Congratulations to Susan!

Erin, I had a 10 and a half pounder last time...she just wasn't going to come out the normal way! However I've heard lots of anecdotes similar to yours, so I reckon there must be more factors in a good delivery other than size :)

Cheers, Liz N

Liz, I hate to say it, but . . .

I've always had what the matchmakers in the old days would call "good hips for birthing." Plenty of room! :)

don't you know me too well? LOL :)

Thanks Sheila -- btw, I wanted to call you from the hospital, but I had your new address/phone # in my desk at home!!

What a week!

After mother's day dinner at my MIL's on Sunday night, we came home, and I joked w/ dh that I needed some prostaglandins... those of you who want to "speed things up" w/ a little help from your dh, be careful what you ask for! Within 10 minutes afterward, I was in active labor!

Contractions began at about 9 p.m. 45sec.-1 min. and 5 min. apart from the beginning. I was at the hospital by 11 p.m and was already 5 cm. Unfortunately, Robby was showing a slightly lowered heartrate at the end of each contraction... and when they broke my water, there was meconium in it... so next thing I knew, I had an emergency c-section. The doctor confirmed later that I had a "fast blooming case of chorioamniotisis (sp?)... i.e. an infection of the amniotic fluid... apparantly it happens in like 1% of births, and is a leading cause for premature birth, but she didn't think I'd been carrying the infection for long... it may very well have been the reason the baby was reacting poorly to the contractions, though...

Robert LaForest was born on Monday morning at 3:30 a.m... and was 9 lbs. 6 oz. and 21" (4 oz. bigger than Aaron was, and Robby was a week early!)... he looks a lot like Aaron... same light reddish brown hair and cleft chin :) He really is just beautiful!

I came home last night... I could've stayed until today, but I wasn't getting any rest at the hospital... can someone tell me why they feel it necessary to wake you up at 3 a.m. to do a hearing test or a weight check on the baby?? I'm like, "HELLO! Can we not do this in the morning????" LOL

Aaron is starting to warm up to his baby brother. Last night he told me that our family has a mama, a daddy, an Aawon (Aaron), and a "Baby Wobby" in it :) He was a little upset with me when I was in the hospital, and he acted up a little, but I think he's better now.

Robby has his days and nights mixed up, but other than that, he's a very sweet, mild-tempered baby. It's very easy to get him to stop crying! We're in love already :)

So now, I'm very sore, and my feet look like someone pumped them up with air... much more swollen than with my last (vaginal) delivery. I imagine it'll take me a bit longer to get back exercising this time. I was looking back at Sheila's info in my instructor training manual this morning, and it takes at lest 4 weeks for the internal stitches to heal. My big challenge physical challenge right now is to stand up straight and walk a little bit. I could easily let myself look like a little old lady right about now!
Thanks for all of the nice wishes :)
Susan

I'm not sure!

My OB thinks I could've done it... although my older son at 9 lbs. 2 oz. needed a vaccum extractor. I was shocked that this little boy was even bigger!

RE: YEAH!! Congratulations!

The lady in the room next to me had a 10 lb. 2 oz. baby vaginally with only 4 pushes!

It wasn't Robby's size that caused this one to be a c-section (see my post)... although I suspect that it would've been close. It was suprising to learn that he was such a big 'un since he was a week early, though!

... and I SO agree with you about the healthy baby being the goal... I've already had a few people ask me if I'm disappointed with the c-section. It wasn't all that much fun, but no way am I upset about it. I feel really lucky to have been with an OB who was aware and who was very interested in putting the health of the baby first... she didn't want to wait until transition to see how much more distressed the baby would get, y'know?

Thanks for the nice note :)

RE: Awww!

Wow, Susan, sounds like quite the dramatic labor and delivery! I'm very happy to hear that they saved you and the baby from any possible problems, and that you're home so soon after a c-section. Yeah what is up with those night nurses? I guess they have nothing better to do with their time. ;) Hah!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations, Susan!

Whew -- what a story! I'm just glad you both are healthy and enjoying getting to know each other. Hope you're on the mend soon -- let us know how you're doing when you get a moment.

Hazel

P.S. I found a copy of Pregnancy magazine and really enjoyed it! Very informative. Can't wait to see your article.

RE: don't you know me too well? LOL :)

OH WOW SUSAN!!!!!!!!! I have not been able to get on line for almost three weeks now and how great to hear this news. I'm all teary eyed and so happy for you. 9 pounds 6 ounces, what a big and healthy baby. Good for you. I'm so happy to hear that you are recovering nicely and in good spirits. It sounds as if you had a bit of a challenging delivery. Aawon is adjusting nicely to his new brother Wobby ;-). Robert LaForest is a very stately name. Was he named after anyone? Well take your time coming back to exercise. I know that for me it is taking a little longer the second time to get back into pre-pegnancy shape. I, too, gained 37 pounds (or was it 38) and at a month later, I still have 15 pounds to lose.

Well, lots of hugs and good wishes to you and your family! Take care and rest well.

RE: Congratulations, Susan!

Hi Hazel,

I'll have 4 articles in Pregnancy Magazine sometime this year (unless my editors kill an article for some reason)...
"Powering Up Your Pelvic Floor"
"Image of a Mother" (body image, exercise, and how it effects pregnancy)
"Get On Board" (online parenting communities)
and "The Power Behind the Push" (using abs, relaxed kegels, and breathing techniques during pushing)...

You'll see bits of Sheila, Cathe (and Cathe board members), and other Healthy Moms instructors in each of the articles :0)

(Toot-toot... LOL... Just tootin' my horn! :)

Hi Susan,

I just wanted to add my belated congratulations on your little boy! I have not been able to spend much time online since I am getting ready for my c-section next week so I was thrilled to see your good news! I hope you are recovering well and getting some sleep. Take good care of yourself and I will look forward to joining you in recovery and a persuit to get back in shape this summer!
