Doing a 5k - need advice!

Hi

Wondered if anyone could give me some advice on this please...

I'm signing up to do a 5k run in early May for Charity (Cancer Research) but also want to carry on doing Cathe and Slim Series. Hopefully, I'd like to advance to a 10k later in the year.

I'm fairly fit (been doing Cathe for 6+months) but lacking in stamina. We have a treadmill arriving tomorrow which will help with the training (especially with the bad weather). I'm just a little concerned with over-training as I'm already exercising for an hour in the morning 6 days/week. When Hardcore arrives, I'll hopefully be doing the accompanying rotation.

Any advice is very welcome as to a workout schedule etc,
Andrea

Hi, Andrea, you might try some days where you add to your hour and others where you substitute running for the usual cardio. Since the 5K is a short distance, throwing in 2-3 days of running shouldn't upset your schedule too much. Two-three milers to start with, to get a feel for it. I'd run one at a comfortable pace, one at hard pace and do some alternate work as well, run hard for 1 minute, run recovery for one to two minutes. Check out the info at http://www.runnersworld.com. Back when I raced alot, Cathe's Interval Max was a favorite endurance builder for me and if you can do Cathe, you can race a 5K nicely. When Hardocre comes, you should be able to enjoy it fully. Be sure to increase the time you spend running as the race gets closer. Since you are already fit, I think you'll easily incorporate running and have a wonderful 5K. You sound like you are tuned into your body and it will tell you what's too much. Good luck! Racing is a blast!
