I had to share this with you, Cathe, because I knew you would appreciate it. After 2 years of being on a waiting list, I interviewed for and was offered the coveted volunteer position of "puppy socializer" at the Guide Dogs for the Blind School in San Rafael (bay area), California. I've been volunteering there for the past 2 years as a dog walker, and I had my name on the waiting list, and it finally happened! I'm sure Canine Partners has a similar program.
As a puppy socializer, my job will be to provide human contact to the puppies in the interim period after they've left their mom but before they leave to join their puppy raiser (i.e., the wonderful people like you). It's a very hands-on position and you get the privilege of working with the future grads of the program. I'll be doing this every other Saturday. There are people on my team that have been doing this for over 30 years. Once you've been offered the position, you just don't give it up (which is why you spend 2 years on the waiting list!).
Of course, these things never happen at the right time. My husband and I just bought a house and have spent the last 6 weeks managing a remodeling project and doing a lot of cleaning and painting. Spare time is something I don't have right now, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity. I do think we're always capable of handling whatever comes our way, whether we think we can or not.
Hope you and your family are doing well. I'm sure Eric is growing in leaps and bounds. Thanks for listening!
