Does protein put on weight?

:D I bought some whey protein powder and drink it two times per day for muscle growth at 2 grams fat, 20 grams protein, 2 grams of sugar and I notice my clothes are getting tighter. I have been drinking this for a week now. Do protein drinks cause weight gain as well as muscle growth? If so, this has got to STOP! ;( Any suggestions on how not to gain weight and yet build muscle?

How many calories is in it? I think if you eat more calories than you burn, you store the extra calories (either protein, carb, or fat) as excess fat. But who knows if that is why your clothes are tight.

I would think you could replace some of the carb or fat in your "old" diet with your protein powder calories, you would be building muscle (assuming you are stimulating for muscle growth) without adding fat. That is, don't eat your "old" diet (pre buying the protein powder diet) and ADD the protein powder to it...REPLACE something.

I was surprised when I looked at the calories on a protein bar....cha ching.

More educated folks may be able to add.

I'm with Jen. Try cutting out some of your carb and fat calories and replacing them with the protein calories. I don't think I'd add the protein in addition to your regular diet. I've been eating a lot more protein lately and losing weight, so I don't think it's the protein itself causing you the problems. I think it's adding to your total calories. Also, try mixing your protein shake with water instead of milk. After you drink it that way once or twice, if it's a good protein shake, you honestly won't be able to tell the difference.

2% milk is still pretty high in fat. Perhaps going to 1% or even skim milk...?? That could add up to big savings on fat.

I bought non-fat milk to go in mine, and I replaced what I was eating with my protein shake. I have had no problem with weight gain, still losing....... Rhonda :7

I find it is really hard for me to get enough protein. I've been eating high protein bars (odwella) 16 grams protein. Finally my nails aren't falling apart (also almonds). Not sure if this is why my nails are better... I've never had protein drinks though.

robyn, I get those edge bars, I think they are advantage edge at walmart 21 grams of protein, their like 1.67 each tho, I got some at Sams, called Worldwide Pure Protein, strawberry cheesecake flavored, they have 21 grams of protein. I have seen a few more at walmart too, so keep looking :7 .by the way the edge ones have about 1-3 grams of sugar, these I got at sames have 7 grams of sugar .... Rhonda :7

Robyn, the Advantage Edge bars aren't the greatest in taste they only have a few grams of sugar, the other ones are a little sweeter. I get past the taste, because I want the protein. .... Rhonda:7

Hi Rhonda and Robyn-

Rhonda- I agree w/ you on the flavor of most of those Advantage Edge Bars.. but, have you tried the Apple Cobbler Flavor? Its fairly good. Its a cinnamony apple flavor and the apple flavor tastes reasonably like apple... (Not the Jolly Rancher Green Apple Flavor!) It does have 5 gm of carbohydrate, so if that's an issue it might not work.. but its 24 gms protein for 210 calories.

howdy Lynn,
I like the blueberry .. I think its blueberry cobbler but not sure, but I like it the best, I do also get the cookies n cream ... I keep trying different ones, seeing what tastes the best....... Rhonda
