I've never actually had to wear a night guard for bruxism, but when I got my braces off, I did have to wear my clear retainers at night, so I know where you're coming from.
I do remember soaking them in mouthwash, but NOT being able to leave them in the mouthwash during the day. I would wake up, drop them in mouthwash mixed with water, then after breakfast, when I brushed my teeth, I would brush them and allow the them to air dry.
At night, before I popped them in, I would do a second quick dip in the mouthwash/water mix to help with the taste and hopefully kill some bacteria. Twice a week I would use a denture cleaner foaming tablet to really clean them. I'm also very sensitive to taste and this worked fine more me.
They held up very well and I never had to get a second set made before i just plain didn't have to wear them anymore.
Good luck!
