Does Anyone Else Get High?

..on RUNNING!

I do different cardios at home, with DVD workouts, Cathe's and others. No high.

I go to the park for a run, and I truly feel like I'm on drugs afterwards! I stretch in the sun, and look at the grass/plants below me, and think they are beautiful! I feel like a MILLION bucks, I swear, I smile and walk happy and am in SUCH a phenomenal mood!!

I feel GOOD after a good step or KB workout, but not like this. It totally blows me away , EVERY time!

Chris - I sure wish I did when I ran. That's why I still don't call myself a runner. I just don't enjoy it like that. I keep waiting for the runner's high, but I have yet to feel it.

Glad you got that run in today. I should be hitting the streets after work since we finally have sunshine and it's actually in the 60's!

Really, Heather? You don't, ever?

I was almost thinking it was WHY people ran.

Maybe it was my (distant) history of stimulating those endorphin centers and they're just "ready" and eager to be stimulated again?

Nope, never. I've heard of it, and I think I would know it when it happens, right? Running is probably my least favorite exercise, but every now and then I get an "itch" for it. Those runs I do enjoy more than others, but still no *buzz* I do more bc it is hard and it challenges me than for sheer enjoyment. Perhaps that is why

ABSOLUTELY YES! :D Not everytime, but that's what makes me keep it up because there is nothing like that runner's high! When I was just beginning to run in April, I believed the runner's high was just a myth...like unicorns or leprachauns! And then one day....I found it!!!! Can't stop now!

Running makes me very, very happy in a way no other cardio workout does. Running keeps me sane and I feel so accomplished and full of life when I run! Running also makes me appreciate how lucky I am to be healthy enough to run. :)

I WISH I enjoyed running. I run only occasionally because when I run all I can think about is how painful it is. But I keep trying to find that high. I hope to develop a love for this form of exercise, hmmmm. :(:(

I do. Not all the time though. I always get a high after I cross the finish line of a race though. That is the best feeling in the world. Even if I did crummy I still feel a sense of accomplishment.

Absolutely--I think that's why I can't seem to quit! Every once in a while I think I need a mental or physical break from it, but after a week away, I'm longing to go back to it. There's just no other feeling that matches what I feel when I run!

This is EXACTLY how I feel. And on the days that I run, I'm like the Energizer Bunny....NON.STOP.GAYLE! :)

Yes!!!!!! While I always loved exercise videos, running used to be the centerpiece of my exercise routine. Everything else was a very effective and fun supplement. Once I was forced to stop running because of an IT problem that simply cannot be resolved, I've lost a lot of my motivation for exercise in general. NOTHING, not even an intense cardio session, gives me the same high and satisfaction that a good run does. Even a bad run produces different chemicals or something. No matter how miserable the run may have been, I am always in happy la-la land for hours afterward. It's very cathartic.

ALL the time!!!

Yes, but so does an absolutely fabulous powerwalk where I take the speeds (5.8mph on Sunday) and alternately the inclines to the max (whack it up to 15% and keep it there), accompanied by my favourite "get your butt movin'" soundtrack!

I have found that the high is highest when my need for it has been the greatest, i.e., when I haven't managed to exercise for a few days, I'm getting really pissed off at the world and everyone in it and the stress is mounting up way too high. On those days, I head to the gym, hit the treadmill, switch off from everything outside the gym and turn my pleasure seeking brain on. I soar over Mt. Kilimanjaro and I'm loving it. I really, really, reaaaaaaaally wish I could bottle that feeling. When I feel this I have to wonder why everyone doesn't exercise?

Chris - Erica's response is a big part of why I run - the "Because I can and others can't" idea. I feel accomplished after I have run, especially if I go longer or harder or do some major hills. But no euphoria ever. When I do a race, it's to push my own limits as well as to run for those who can't, especially in a race like the Komen Race for the Cure.

I agree! NOTHING like running. It's killing me right now to do short little runs because of my PF! Some days I want to run and run and run and run because I don't want the feeling to end!!!

Sooo cool to hear others get this too! It's not something I ever got on a Treadmill, (the few times I did use one, which is probably why I don't use them or WANT one). It's got to be outdoors for me. I've experienced it when it's started to rain, and usually that would make me run for cover, but this time, I wanted to KEEP running in it, it felt heavenly!!! I also need music, that enhances it for me. But I've definitely gotten the feeling that I could run for MILES and MILES. And I feel so strong and love that my legs can carry me this way!

And I also get "runners envy". When I see others running and for some reason I can't, I feel bad and wish I could!
