Does anyone else belong to a gym too??

So, I used to only do Cathe's videos for my fitness, then someone talked me into doing triathlons. I joined a gym for the pool and have been there for four years. I did alot of damage to my ankle this past summer and probably will only be able to do sprint tris from here on out, and even then, it's a maybe. Because of the cost of the gym membership, I didn't order STS. But now, my membership is up in March and I'm seriously thinking about NOT renewing it and ordering STS. I want it soooooo bad:eek:!! LOL! As for the pool, swimming is my least favorite thing to do and since I can't be competitive in tri's anymore, I'm wondering if the membership is worth it??
Ok guys, help decide please:confused:!!!!!!

I belong to a gym, but only because it's free and I'm a personal trainer there. I love the gym because it adds variety. However, my personal workouts take place mostly at home. If you have internal motivation and the equipment to get done what you want (for your goals) drop the gym. However, if you need the gym atmosphere to get it done (external motivation) and want variety with classes (as if Cathe doesn't give enough variety!?!?!) then stick with it.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your decision making!

Thanks Laura,
It does help. I only used the gym for the pool and the leg press and cable machine. But other than swimming, I feel there's nothing I can't accomplish at home that I can at the gym. As for the tri's hopefully, my past swimming will get me through a half mile swim should I do one or two this year. Not that I was fast to begin with. LOL!!

Thanks!

I was just talking to DH about this last night. I have a gym membership, but it's free through my job. A nice little perk to be sure. But I have my own workout room at home, treadmill, free weights, step (with slanted risers), and, of course, my Cathe DVD collection. I haven't been to the gym much since I got the membership. I did use an elliptical once, but I didn't like it. I don't really care for stationary bikes either. Nor do I lift heavy enough to want to use the weight machines. I hate to swim and group classes don't appeal to me. So nothing really at the gym for me. If I didn't have the membership free, I certainly wouldn't have it at all.

Yeah, exactly! I have a treadmill, an elliptical, barbell, dumbells, an indoor trainer for my bike, a step, chinup bar, medicine ball, and two stability balls!!! Along with all my Cathe workouts, is it worth it? It's only $17/ month, still......a penny saved is a penny earned.

I've trained at a gym for about 20 years & I will never give it up. I love the variety of machines & classes it offers. My routine is about 50% at home, 50% at the gym. Home stuff is mostly cardio & circuit, gym is heavy lifting.

I do agree that I really need the gym to lift heavy--but I won't be getting back to that for awhile as I'm preggo. My arms just can't handle the weight I need to lift as heavy as my legs can handle. I "need" my Smith machine, calf press, lying/seated leg curl, etc. Plus, I love what the cable machine offers. If you don't want to lift heavy and have the equipment at home, then there's your answer about that issue.

IMHO, I agree with LauraMax about the heavy weights. I need the gym for this.

I recently joined a gym to add variety - and to get me out of the house. I really like the atmosphere. The majority of my fitness program is home, but I do enjoy using the classes and the different machines that the gym offers.

I went ahead and cancelled my membership. Tomorrow I get to order STS!!!! WAAAHOOOO!!!! I'm cool with it. I have about 100 lbs to put on my barbell and dumbells that go up to 35 lbs. If need be, I'll just keep adding to those collections. LOL!! Hopefully, I won't reget not getting in the pool......

You'll have to keep us posted on the STS excitement!!! :)

Gosh, I'm sorry to hear about your ankle! :( That's no fun. Injuries are so frustrating.
I do tris too-- love it! If you decide that you're game for another this upcoming season you'll have to let me know!

I belong to a gym too. I do the cardio machines there. I only have a treadclimber at home. I like to run, elliptical, the step mill, etc. I have been doing mostly Cathe cardio the past couple of months and although I love it, I think it has taken a toll on my body ( the impact of the intervals on my knees and most recently my calf) Once my calf feels better I will back at the gym (as opposed to doing step). I also have a trainer once a week. I seem to work harder with someone pushing me.

I don't think I will give up my membership. I do go through stages of how much I go weekly but it keeps my options open.

I have a gym membership and I also have Cathe. I do the majority of my strength training at the gym and my cardio at home w/ Cathe.

I've discovered that I need to lift heavy to feel and look my best, so I need the gym w/ access to the machines and spotters to make that happen.

I belong to a gym where they only offer spin and floor classes. I LOVE it. I love the social aspects, the motivation from others. I do Cathe throughout the week and I go to classes. I also can take my kids for no interruptions. It all depends on the enjoyment factor for you.

Oh yes, the social aspect is another great thing about the gym. I moved here almost 7 years ago, & I've met most of my closest friends there. It makes exercise so much fun! :)

I used to belong to a very expensive gym, but I started taking tap classes two nights a week and I wasn't getting there very often, so I dropped the membership last February. And, surprisingly, I don't miss it at all! I have a large Cathe collection, along with a few other instructors, and I find I can do everything I want right here at home. Plus, DH has an amazing weight bench/collection, so I use some of his stuff. I thought I would miss the elliptical and the indoor track and the pool, but I don't really.

I think it's an each to his own kind of thing. I didn't care for the people at my gym at all, so that was a part of my decision, too. I didn't make any friends there or feel like it motivated me to be around other people. I get a lot more motivation by the check in I joined on this forum.

All that is to say I don't think you'll regret your decision. You sound very self-motivated, which is all you need to reach your fitness goals. Everybody's different, which is why it's so nice to have so many choices.

I canceled my STS pre-order. I would rather go to the gym and use state of the art equipment and since I lift as heavy as I can stand and I do total body three days a week and have lots of variety all for the price of under $200.00 annually. I like to go in, get the job done in an hour, and be on my way without all the filler that tradionally is part of DVD workouts.
