Do Perfect Push-up Handles work on carpet?

Hi all,

I stopped by my local sporting goods store today to check out the Perfect Push-Up handles that everyone's been talking about, but the photos on the box only show them being used on wood floors.

Do they work alright on carpet, maybe with a yoga mat underneath even?

TIA!!

Yeah! Thanks so much, Anne, for the quick response! I may need to make another trip back out . . . . I've heard so many good things about them!

>Ooh, I want a pair of those, too!! I'm going to have fun
>getting ready for the cardioless STS. :p :7

Hey Michele,

I know . . . but when I told my DH that I'd looked at $40 push-up handles today, he looked at me as if asking, "Do you REALLY need those?!!" Of course not, but aren't new workout toys so much fun?!

You guys are such enablers! I was looking at these earlier because of the stress that push-ups put on my wrists. If you get them, let us know how they work for you.

I was looking at these, too, to alleviate wrist pain but then a buddy mentioned just using dumbbells (thanks, gibbee!). So last night I did my push-ups with my hands around my 3# neoprene dumbbells. Worked great to take the pain off my wrists.

I understand the perfect push-ups rotate, so it's not exactly the same thing, but in order to take the strain off my wrists, the dumbbells worked for that. Maybe if I get better at push-ups I'll look at the perfect ones, but for now, the dumbbells are my new best friends.

Besides, gotta save my $$$ for STS!

Hi Leann,

I just wanted to let you know that Perfect Pushup makes a $20 version. The only difference, that I can tell, is that handle is made from plastic instead of steel. I got mine at Walgreen's. HTH

QUESTION! Is it because the "Perfect Pushups" rotate that it helps eliminate wrist pain? I have arthritis in both my thumb joints so push ups off the floor hurt, but I find doing it with dumbbells just as painful. Does the rotation help that???? I'll spend the money if it makes a difference! :)

darli ann - It was my understanding that the actual rotation made the movement more natural and alleviated stress on your wrists and elbows. I have done the pushups with dumbbells as well and it kills my thumbs too.

Thanks so much, Linda! I think that I'll get this version instead since $40 is a bit much to spend right now!

Yes, using the dumbbells doesn't work well for me, either. I think that I'll get the $20 version that Linda mentioned and I can let you all know how they are, if you'd like. I probably won't be able to pick them up until later this week, though.

I'm interested to know why it hurt your thumbs? Is your thumb trapped between the dumbbell and the floor? Or is the pain way at the base of the thumb near the wrist? I didn't notice any pain in my wrist/hands at all, but maybe I was so thrilled the pain was missing from where it usually was I didn't pay attention.

ETA: I also do push-ups on my knees. Maybe that's another difference?

Hi April,

For me, it's because my thumb always winds up feeling trapped agains the floor when I move downwards. Even when I've used larger dumbbells, this ends up happening. I'm not sure if other people have the same problem or if their thumb pain is coming from a different source.

Okay, I just got my PP handles for Christmas, so I haven't used them a lot, but I'll share what I know so far. Pushups for me are hard on my wrists, and I tried using dumbbells , but still found them uncomfortable for my hands and my wrists. I don't remember any thumb pain directly though. Anyway, with the PP handles my wrists do not hurt, now I do not do the full quarter turn they suggest yet, because that seems to make the pushups harder, but the handle does allow for my wrist to turn enough on its own for comfort. Also, the handles allow for a better ROM so the pushups are tougher anyway!:p By the way, I do my pushups on my toes. HTH:)

Three questions:
1) Are these the things that swivel like I see advertised on late-night tv?
2) What if your hands are slightly arthritic or stiff? I couldn't do pushups on dumbbells because it aggravated the stiffness in my hands. Is there enough surface room UNDER the handles to press your hands FLAT while you do the moves if you need to and...
3) Do you feel you have to make an extra effort to keep your upper body stable (like the way the extra effort you need when using the stability ball or the bosu makes other exercises tougher)? I'm thinking it might make certain aspects of DOING pushups more difficult but the difficulty would ultimately make your upper body stronger. That's how it seems to me when I watch the commercial and I think that might be a good thing.

I sort of need to know this before I buy.

I think it's having my hands flat on the floor, with all the weight on that fatty part of the lower palm (near the wrist) that hurts my arthritic thumbs. I would like to bear more of the weight on the center of my palms and thought dumbbells would help, but DANG its still painful. I do my pushups through the pain but some days it's slightly excruciating. x( I'd really like to try these things.

SSW - 1. Yes these are the things that swivel.
2. I just tried it and yes you can easily get your hands under the handles and flat (unless you have some really huge man hands!LOL:p )
3. Yes there is more stability involved and a stronger contraction at the top. So yes your upper body will become stronger.

HTH!

Darli Ann - I don't know what to tell you about your thumbs, other than the handles on these are padded, but not soft, and also have a curve to the top, which dumbbells don't have, so maybe that would make a difference for you! And I find that the weight is on the center of my palms with these! HTH

Now, you ladies have me doing too many pushups! LOL!;-)
