Do It Yourself Spray Tan

Has anyone done this successfully?? I just bought some Neutrogena spray tan and I woke up looking like a streaky mess!!! The color looks great and very natural...too bad it's in stripes all down my arms and legs!! GRRR...any tips to get an even tan?

I've never tried a spay tan a friend of mine uses towel wipes and it looks pretty good. I honestly get my tan the old fashioned way, . . .which is the worst way. Hanging out by the pool reading a book. I've got asian pacific islander skin though and it just tans so easily, . I've never had a sun burn. I load up on sun screen and wear a hat and sun glasses.

I've actually had better luck with the tan towels as well. I shower, shave and then put lotion on my knees, elbows, and ankles/feet. I then use one towel on my legs and one on my upper body. I don't use them on my face, however. I buy more expensive lotion strictly for faces. I've had good luck with this combo - hope that helps!

I usually use the towels too. I tried Kate Sommerville self tanning towels and Dr. Denise tanning towels and got pretty good results. I most recently picked up this lotion at QVC (see below) when I was there and the lotion comes out brown so you can see where you are applying it. It disappears as you rub it in. It works pretty well but I have olive skin and I think that helps with not getting that orangy color that some self tanners sometimes have (although overall most companies have hugely improved in losing that fake orange color when it comes to self tanners).

Thanks, Cathe, for the link! I actually did go ahead and purchase that tanner online (thanks for enabling me:p) but went directly to the BE website and ordered a couple other things so I could get the free shipping! I can always find something else on their website to buy!

There are some really good self tanners out there - it makes SO much more sense than all the sun damage and leathery skin!

Great Heidi....good luck! Just remember to wash your hands RIGHT AWAY with sudsy soap. They recommend (and it does help) smearing your hands with an SPF lotion before applying so the stain doesn't absorb as much into the palms.

Another helpful trick that I learned to avoid those extra dark spots on the bonier areas such as the ankles, wrists, knees, elbows, fingers and toes, is to apply moisturizer generously JUST to these areas before applying self tanner to dilute it.

I absolutely love Jergens Natural Glow. It will not get you super dark, but it is very natural looking. I have used it for two years now and have never had a problem with it looking orange or streaky. The only negative I can think of is the smell, but even that isn't too bad. Both the body lotion and facial moisturizer are great.

I second the Jergens. I have also used it for a few years, and it never fails to give me a great tan. It is a great moisturizer also! I love it!

Those of you using a spray tanner, do you rub it in after you spray it? I do and I've never had streaks or stripes or anything on me. I use Banana Boats spray tanner and love it. I spray it on, rub it evenly around and then wash my hands. It dries so quick and I never feel it the rest of the day, that's why I love the spray tanners. Lotions always feel so sticky and make my pores sweat.

Maybe that's what I did wrong; I didn't rub it in. I was thinking of it, but was afraid it would come off. Like I said, I really loved the color, just not the streaks. I also think I may have gotten dressed too quickly because the lighter parts were the sides of my legs and arms where I would pull on jeans & a shirt. I'm gonna try 1 more time and rub it in and if that fails, I'm going w/ the Bare Minerals.

Thanks everyone!!
