Dive bomber pushups

So, in looking at the new P90x+ clips I got to thinking about the dive bomber push-ups. I uderstand how to go "under the fence", but how do you get back without wrenching your lower back? I'm afraid I never really 'go for it' because it feels like I'm going to lose control and hurt myself.

Thanks!

Good question Susan. I think the answer is "very carefully!" My DH really jacked his back up good trying these types of push-ups a few years ago. You have to be extremely controlled and not just throw your body into the movement. It really is an accident waiting to happen (IMHO).

I agree that they look risky. I even get nervous attempting just the "downwards" position, never mind going back up! I have a lot of tweaky issues with my back, so I think I'll have to go slowely with these.

For me, they are just too dangerous. I've been having lower back issues and these just make the pain worse with the exaggerated anterior tilt of the pelvis needed to do them...

I am relieved to find it's not just me being wussy, but there are really some serious risks doing that exercise!

A modification for them, that Tony shows in P90X, is just to go into a 'downward dog' position to get back, rather than going back 'under the fence'.

I don't know HOW I do it, but I CAN do it. It doesn't bother me at all. It kicks my butt all over the place but hurting my back has never even entered my mind....Perhaps I'm just a wierdo!:p :7

I just did them as I did X Chest and Back...I definately push back with my arms/shoulders and chest to begin with but I definately stick my butt out there as well. I also put my nose to the floor so that as my butt my comes up my back is not all arched and uncomfortable. Does that make any sense?? I do them slow and controlled and don't have any issues. I'm finding it very hard to explain....

That does make a bit of sense. In Drill Max or whatever video it is, Cathe seems to really arch her back in both directions, if I remember correctly.

To be honest I didn't understand how to do them until I tried them in P90X. When I first tried them in the Cathe vid they are in I had no clue what I was doing and therefore deemed them impossible...I guess everyone has their own way of doing any exercise and I just found it easier to follow Tony and "the kids" for this particular one.
