Digestive Enzymes + Rambling

My quest to figure out what the heck is causing my bloating and gas problem has led me to digestive enzymes.

After listening to my symptoms, a lady who works at the Vitamin Shoppe (and said she was a licensed dietician) recommended that I take bromelian. I am now reading that maybe I need to take a digestive enzyme that has more enzymes in it. Any recommendations?
I've been taking bromelian for two weeks now, and haven't noticed any differences.

I lowered my protein intake and added some more "good" carbs, like many of you recommended, and starting using Jay Robb's whey protein powder (only 1/2 scoop in the morning in my oatmeal). This pp doesn't have addictives. I wonder if I should try Jay Robb's egg white protein powder. Maybe the egg white version would be better than the whey.

I think my problems might be caused by too much soy protein isolate, but from reading, I hear that this type of soy protein is not supp. to cause gas and bloating. Gosh, I am sooo freaking confused!! Looking over my daily menus for the last two months hasn't helped me. I was eating one bar a day and using one scoop of protein powder before I started to feel bad. Now, I'm still eating one bar and only use 1/2 scoop of better (no additive) pp. Are there any bars that have no soy protein isolate? Even the Kashi GoLean Cereal has it!

You might have developed an intolerance to the soy protein. Why don't you try eliminating all forms of soy for a week? This will mean reading all labels because soy shows up in nearly everything. If you don't feel a lot better after a week, then something else is going on.

I just called the allergy place to see what the results of my test, which was done two years ago. I could'nt remember. They said I have a moderate/slight allergy to soy. A 2 on a scale of 4. So, I guess this could be the problem. They also said I "scored" the same for peanuts.
 
Have you seen your doctor for the bloating and gas? I have been dealing with this for over a year now and finally am seeking help. I start the day off pretty good, but everyday around 2:00 or so I get very bloated and start with the extreme gas. It really doesn't seem to matter what I have eaten, I cut out all protein powders, bars etc...about a month ago and it hasn't gone away. I recently tested high for a TTG antibody which suggested Celiac Disease, but then had an endoscopy and the biopsy was negative. I am now going for a capsule endoscopy to verify that I don't have it since the blood work was very high. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there in case you hadn't thought about it.

Your struggle sounds just like mine. I am fine until around 2 or 3. Then it looks like I am 6 month's pregnant and I have terrible gas. This all started in 2006. The diagnosis was IBS and I was taking Zelnorm w/success. Then that medicine was taken off the market. I was told that because I took antibiotics, the good bacteria in my stomach were gone and the bad ones had taken over. I take the good bacteria now, Cuturelle.

I've taken medicine to make my stomach contract more. That one gave me serious side effects. I've had allergy tests, stool sample test, blood tests, endoscopy test, the test where they give you oatmeal and take pictures/scans of how fast your food digests....

I was fine for about a year, and now I'm back to how I was 2 years ago. Very frustrating. I never had problems when I was eating processed, crappy food.

Who the heck knows... I wish you the best of luck with your problems. I can certainly relate.

My sister was diagnosed with celiac last Spring. She was having to get iron infusions and couldn't maintain her magnesium levels, problems that can result from celiac. Her first biopsy was negative. She continued to decline and a second biopsy was positive.

Even if the second test turns out negative, it would probably be worthwhile to go gluten-free for a while to see if it resolves your problems. But wait until the testing is completed before doing that.
 
Have you considered it might be lactose intolerance? If you eliminate all your dairy for 1-2 days that should be plenty of time to see if goes away.

I also have a problem with gas when I take calcium supplements. I also gave up gluten, not because of celiac but because I can't digest it very well. It causes IBS symptoms, not always gas but the bloating and constipation.

Kashi fiber cereals made me blow up like a balloon by 1 p.m. each day. Miserable I was, and thinking I was allergic to milk, fruit, etc. Finally cut out the fiber cereal and it went away.
 
I cut out all products w/soy, and after only 1 1/2 days I'm noticing a HUGE difference. The gas and bloating are almost gone. I guess I didn't realize how much soy is in products, and when I started eating the cereal, bread, bars, and protein powder all in one day, my body said, "Oh, heck no!" I might have found the enemy.

Anyone have any suggestions on digestive enzymes? I'm still going to start taking one that has all of them in one.

See a doctor first to know what is going on with you.

I take Chewable papaya enzyme when I get a little upset stomach. It is so subtle, and then you realize there is no more upset stomach. I love taking this, much better than lets say Alka-seltzer. Also try and eat as naturally as you can. No processed foods such as bars, boxed cereal...or anything that comes in a package. Make oatmeal instead, or if you need a cereal, opt for shredded wheat, cream of wheat...use other milks, such as walnut milk, rice milk...ask around what tastes good out there.

Hi,

For me it's oatmeal and egg whites. It's so bad that I won't either them in the morning anymore because by noon I look like I'm 4 months pregnant. Oh, and I even made some healthy waffles with oat flour and it was worse, so I haven't made any more of those either.
