Sorry it took me so long to reply to your question Robin. Red-40 is made up of ground up female beetles. Very gross. I read recently that the FDA is pushing for the ingredients in stuff like Red-40 to be included in the ingredient listings on food labels. Of course the food companies would NOT like that to happen.

Cochineal.

I just remembered the name of the beetle!

Dole (?) used to make some juice blends that unfortunately contained this dye.

Thanks for the reply...."ewwwwww!!" Hmmmm, I think I may have read something about that....is it in some candies??? Imagine getting extra protein and not even knowing it....yeckx(
