Did your body change a lot after 40????

This is a very interesting discussion. I am 47 (soon to be 48) and I didn't notice any difference in metabolism, but then again I have to mention that I consider myself semi-vegetarian. I eat meat one day and then the next I'm a veggie, and alternating so forth.

My doctor says that I have the metabolsim of a teenager (I eat about 2300 cals a day) but that cracks me up because I am also hypothyroid and thought that slowed down the metabolism. I weigh 5 pounds more than I did in 5th grade (but I was a fat kid). One summer I grew 3-4 inches and that was the end of that. I attribute my slenderness to a good diet, few sweets, and an active lifestyle. I have increased my activity but not my intensity. I alternate walking, weights, and yoga to keep a balanced approach. The main thing I have noticed as I've aged is that I need more and more yoga to keep my muscles and joints limber. The good part is that I am now as flexible as I was in my twenties, but please keep in mind that I was never the most flexible person.

I agree that life gets better with each decade. I guess it just proves the older and wiser saying. I am really excited to go into my 50's because my 40's were better than my 30's and my 30's were better than my 20's. I think 50 will be great!

Hi Marsha, My feet did hurt at first. I did the first 2 workouts barefoot and my bunion started acting up, so I started wearing my cross trainers which was much better. I then tried wearing my Avias that are the same ones Cathe wears in the new kickbox workout. My feet hurt so bad I had to stop. I have now found that I feel the best with no shoes, but with padded socks that I found at Target. No bunion or feet problems of any kind. I was afraid I might slip at first with just socks, but that hasn't been a problem at all, so far. I haven't tried the Intermediate workout yet. I'm going to stick with the Beginner workout this week and some off the other DVDs and then try intermediate next week. I have heard that the intermediate workout is actually harder than the advanced workout, but I wouldn't know personally. I'm so hooked on these workouts that I can't make myself do anything else. I'm sure that will change once the hardcore workouts get here.:p

At 52 I have not found a slow down in my metabolism. I still eat lots and workout a little less than when I was younger, but that is just me trying to train smarter. Of course any time no matter what age if I eat junk I may see an increase on the scale if I choose to stand on one. It goes away after a couple of days though. I really don't hold a love for my scale it can be a mood breaker so I keep it out of sight.

Diane Sue,

Have you ever had a weight problem? Your body shape appears to be of someone who tends to be on the thinner side...always.

I do lean toward's the thin side. Once I got up to 135 lbs when I worked in a donut shop. I was 19 then. I have had variences from there. For a long time I stayed around 122. This was when I really started lifting heavier weights. Adding more cardio and paying more attention to what I was eating took my weight down.
