Diagnosed with PCOS

Hi there. On Friday I was diagnosed with PCOS. I have had problems since I was a teen (I'm 38 now) and am relieved that FINALLY there is an answer to most of my problems. I was wondering if any of you here have PCOS, and what exactly type of diet do you follow? Also, over the past few years, my abdominal area (mainly my lower to mid area) seems to be getting larger and larger. My dr. recommended that I follow a low carb diet. Anyhow, I have found many great sites since doing my research over the weekend (the best one being soulcysters.com), but wanted to check in with fellow catheites to see if any of you suffer from this. I"m also scheduled to have laproscopic surgery on January 4, and at the same time a D&C, and an H scope. Along with the PCOS, he is checking on endometriosis. He does not want to put me on any hormone treatment til after the surgery. Since I am no longer interested in having children (I do have a wonderful 11 year old), what types of meds will he put me on? BC pills are out of the question since I cannot take anything with estrogen, and I don't want anything that is going to make me gain anymore weight (I need to lose 60-70 lbs) and have a hard time losing as it is.

Thanks for any and all advice, stories, just anything related to PCOS.

Hi, I don't have PCOS but was diagnosed a while back with MEN1, another hormonal disorder caused by benign tumors of the neuroendocrine system. For some of the hormonal imbalances,I can take medication to prevent some of the downstream effects of making too much of a particular hormone, ie lots of prevacid for a gastrinoma. I also produce too much insulin due to an insulinoma and parathyroid peptide hormone. The rest is behavior modification, including exercise, and learning to recognize symptoms that can turn into serious problems. Regular monitoring by your physician is also important to follow progression of the disease and surgery when possible to remove tumors that can be imaged. Will your hormonal symptoms associated with PCOS be remedied following removing of your ovaries. I know these symptoms will likely be replaced by others following your hysterectomy but unfortunately I don't have any suggsetions. Perhaps there is a support forum online comprised of other patients like yourself. Good luck. Keep us posted.

I was diagnosed with PCOS, but my doctor isn't treating it in any way. I've heard (although not from my doctor) that it is sometimes treated with Glucophage, a diabetes med. I used to take Glucophage until I got my blood sugar under control with diet and exercise. I can't honestly say that the PCOS causes me any serious or really even noticeable problems at the present time--at least none that I know about.
