DHEA

To an educated crowd,

Does anyone take DHEA as a supplement? I read recently that it can increase your muscle mass, cut body fat and also increase your sex drive. Sounds too good to be true... I'm sure there are side-effects. What do you guys know about this?

I was going to take that and did for awhile till my hubby was so kind to tell me that is makes facial hair grow!! and I already have to pluck some nasty little hair off my chin so I stopped taking it LOL if that is wrong please tell me so I can tell my hubby LOL

Hi there!
In the recent past I was having some hormone issues, and one of the tests my dr ran was for levels of growth hormone and dhea. Mine were extremely low (about half of what they should be), so he put me on some supplements. It took a little while for me to feel better but boy, what a difference! I went back and had my levels tested again, they were normal.

Then, I got to a point where I was feeling anxious, aggressive, was breaking out with acne, and was just generally not happy. I went off the supplements because I knew it was overload. I haven't been tested in a lonnnnngg time, but I probably should be.

My advice is to NOT mess around with something hormonal, unless you are sure you have a deficiency. The side effects can be unpleasant, and if the need is not there you may cause an imbalance elsewhere! But, if you do decide to try it out, make sure to get a good brand in a small dose (around 5 or 10 mg?).

I had the same reslts as lesliemarie. The benefit for me did not outweigh the excess facial hair problem. I would recommend talking to a dr. about the potential side effects of DHEA before taking it.
