Deviated septum surgery

Hi,if anyone out there has had surgery to correct a deviated septum,i would love to here about your experience, you know pain wise, recovery time and that sort of stuff.I'm gonna have to have this done sometime soon(Recurring infections led to the ct scan that showed significant deviation) and would really appriciate any input. Thanks,Mrsscififanec

Dh had surgery a little over 2 years ago. Well actually he had surgery about 25 years ago for the same thing and they messed it up so bad he could barely breathe through his nose. Finally he went in and had it taken care of.

He was in surgery for less than 45 minutes. It was outpatient. He did ok on Vicodin and took about 1 week off work. He's a construction worker and had problems with balance from the pain meds. I think the worst part was taking the packing out of thse nose and the aftercare visits. He says it was well worth it.

Thats kinda what i thought, the whole packing of the nose kinda freaks me out,so i'm sure i'm gonna be a litle quivering chicken about it , Oh well it wont be the first time ive turned into a nervous Barney Fife type LOL,Mrsscififanec

My sister had it last year. She is a HUGE baby about pain. She said it wasn't bad except for the packing-removal. Like Colleen's husband, she also thinks it was worth it. She can finally breathe through her nose instead of her mouth.

Edited to add: She is such a chicken that she tried to get them to give her anesthsesia when they removed the packing!

See your talking about that packing stuff too,LOL,i just cant imagine that being a pleasant experience, pain doesnt bother me ,i'm pretty tough in that area but the whole packing your nose up thing, pheww lets just say i am glad i'm gonna be drugged up !! I had a bad episode awhile back in surgery and i couldnt breath for a short time and was awake for itand it was pretty scary so anything that could block my breathing sets my nerves off a bit so ive been putting this surgery off but i'm not going to be able to do that any longer,Drat and double drat,Thanks for the insight ,i'm glad your sister is doing better and Colleen i,m glad your Husband is too.

I've been told many many times I need this surgery but I'm too chicken about it. When I get a sinus infection is hell. I have a couple of concerns: pain, recovery, cost (some insurance companies cover half of it) and if my nose is going to change its shape (I like the nose I was born with and I don't want it to change). Thank you for starting this thread.

Hi Rose from what i understand just the correction of a deviated septum does not cause an outward change of appearence that surgery is a different procedure but is often done at the same time as fixing a deviated septum,i was concerned about that as well,i also like my nose.Im pretty sure i'm right about this but will definitly be making sure before i do this,i hope this helps,Mrsscififanec

I confess...I was outside the room when they removed the packing and just hearing DH's comments made me put my head between my legs and I almost passed out...BUT I'm a CERTIFIED PAIN WIMP and I can't even look up close at my dog's eyeball without getting woozy!

But even tho he said that part was awful, he is in heaven now after the surgery.

See Colleen this is what im saying it sounds awful, again i am just glad i'm gonna be drugged up,i am not a wimp when it comes to pain ,i guess it's the blood thing, kinda like Donkey in Shrek "Is that blood " and Bam down he goes ,LOL Mrsscififanec

I had this surgery in 5/03. The worse part was the lame nurse trying to start my IV. Seriously. And the packing doesn't go up that far. In fact, I felt comfortable with the packing as this kept me from bleeding and helped compressd the area and relieved any discomfort. Think of holding your thumb after you have hurt it. It feels better to hold it, doesn't it?

I didn't exercise for about 12 days. I felt like working out sooner but I trust my dr. and followed all of his advise. There was a lot of mucus and junk in the healing but that's to be expected considering the area...LOL! My dr had me use saline solution and that kept the area hydrated and very comfortable.

If this surgery will enhance your quality of life it is so worth it. I had a wonderful dr. that did a great job of taking care of me.

Good luck to you,
Kimberly

Kimberly ,Thanks for the info i was wandering about the down time ,i dont want to loose what little hard earned muscle ive gained, isnt that pitiful my face is killing me and i am worried about wether or not i can exercise ,LOL. Mrsscififanec
