Hi,

You have more experience at long runs so I have some Q's for you.

1. When you use a PowerBar do you just take one bite every 15 min?

2. Also, do I need to use Gatorade on runs over an hour, or would water be sufficient if I have my PowerBar?

3. On any run my calves get real tight and are almost always a little sore the next day. It is down at the bottom of the muscle...the soleus maybe? Anyway, can I go ahead and skip calf work with weights?

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

1) Yes, I just take a little nibble on my walk break & swig some fluid. I'm looking for honey sticks. Keep reading about them in RW as a good sub for gels. Have you tried gels?

2) I've been drinking Extran (Dutch Gatorade) instead of H20. It seems my energy level is better but it could just be because I shortened my long run!

3) I'm guessing more stretching might help your calves. Don't forget post Spinning stretching too. Is Coach Troy good about stretching? You're probably getting more than enough calf work from running & cycling. I do the calf work in LL but it's unweighted & I like the break. Wonder if working the shins would help (muscular balance)?? I like the Kathy Smith ones where you sit with legs extended & use the top foot to apply resistence to the lower working shin/foot. You're not adding mileage/time too quickly are you?

How is your running going other than the calves? Are you getting any cool fall weather?

1. I haven't tried gels and don't really plan too.

3. I do always stretch. It even gets me on my 3 mile runs. I'm adding one mile a week to my long run. I know this is more than the 10% rule until I get to 10 miles. I'm following a Jeff Galloway schedule. I don't think Troy stretches at all, but I do.

The weather has cooled down quite a bit. I am not a cold weather person and it makes my running seem so much harder. We almost always have wind too. But, so far it's going okay.

Thanks!

Andrea

P.S. I remember having honey sticks when I was a kid. I think we got them in Utah???

I hope you don't mind me butting in on your conversation but....

I just went to dogpile.com and typed "honey sticks" on the search line. It came up with a lot of places where you could get them over the internet.

Just a thought....

Shelley :)

Thank you Shelley!

I've looked at running specialty stores & health food stores. Thanks for the lead!

Thanks for the honey stick suggestion and the link! My kids love honey sticks and I hadn't thought about using them instead of gels for my long runs!
