Dairy products

I have checking out the Ms Fit forum and she is another proponent of NOT eating any dairy products. I dont think life is worth living without cottage cheese and yogurt. I cant take multi-vitamins they make me throw up and calcium tablets make me feel like I just shells. Burping up clouds of calcium dust just inst my idea of fun.

Just wondering, what you ladies think of dairy products. Do you eat them or do you avoid them and why?

I eat dairy (then again what DON'T I eat?). I drink skim milk, although I'm making the switch to soy milk. I eat cheese, cottage cheese. I still take multi-vitamins and calcium, because I'm not sure I get enough calcium through diet.

I am a huge fan of dairy. It is a great source of calcium which is very important for us women. I love cheese and yogurt! I only eat organic dairy, though. I do not trust the hormones that FDA says is okay for is to ingest!

The only reason I could see giving up dairy is if you are allergic, which more than half of the population is. If you are allergic it can cause behavioral problems and even health problems. I am lucky enough to not be allergic.

I wouldn't cut out the foods I enjoy. There are a lot of people who choose not to eat dairy, and that is fine, but there are also so many benifits when you keep dairy in your diet. I also feel like it is better to get nutrients and vitamins from nature than pills made in a manufacturing plant. JMO

I've been visiting over at the Ms Fit forums, too, and true, she is a STRONG proponent of NO DAIRY for a myriad of reasons some which are fat content, lactose (milk sugar), and hormones (fed to dairy cows and tainting milk). Also, dairy has no place in a "cutting up" diet for contest prep which is the goal of many members of Ms Fit's forum. But no woman fitness, figure or bodybuilding competitor walks around at 8% BF 24/7/365. It just isn't healthy. So long as it is in keeping w/ your macros for protein, carbs and fat dairy should not be prohibited IMHO from a normal, healthy NON-CONTEST PREP diet.

I'm a Vegan, so no dairy for me! I use soymilk, Tofutti sour cream, have eaten soy yogurt, and use Vegan Rella cheese. None of these items was at all hard to get used to...for me anyway. I am now a huge ingredient reader as milk products can sneak into many things marked Vegetarian...:)...Carole

I also eat dairy (mostly organic due to the hormones and antibiotics companies use on cows that I don't want in my body). I eat yogurt and cheese made with organic grade A milk, but I drink soymilk instead of regular milk. I never understood why people avoid dairy. Even when I was vegetarian I was lacto-ovo because I couldn't get rid of eggs and dairy 100%. I would never substitute real food for a pill of anything. Vitamins and minerals are supposed to be eaten with your diet. In case you have any deficiency or if you know you're not getting enough in your diet then you add the supplements, but a supplement should never substitute the real thing.

I know that people in the music business avoid dairy (or eat it in moderation) because it thickens the saliva and it makes it really hard for them to sing. I know also that some people avoid dairy when they're planning to talk with other people for a long time (I also avoid dairy in this situation and eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead) because it creates an environment in your mouth that makes bacteria grow and then you have a sour taste and bad breath which is not something you want when you're talking to people all day (I could go on and on explaining the science behind this but I don't have time right now). Besides those two reasons (that in my opinion are not health reasons) and being lactose intolerant, I don't know any other reasons to avoid dairy. Perhaps someone who does it for health reasons will post the info here.

i avoid dairy due to allergies, but i love cheese and milk and have them on occasion at great costs to my nosex( i use ff vanilla silk soymilk the rest of the time.

I drink 3 8oz glasses of skim milk a day, plus one fat-free yogurt. I also eat cheese. I don't care what anyone says, I like dairy and I'm not givin' it up! I only drink organic milk - I also am not comfortable with the hormones and antibiotics they use in non-organic.

As I've grown older, I cannot tolerate dairy. Almost anything with milk in it will give me some type of reaction. I get stuffy-headed and "puffy" for lack of a better word (I think it causes inflamation and water retention -- at least for me) and my stomach complains very loudly (you know what I mean). Gastrically -- I can't take it! I've stopped eating ice cream for that reason and the thought of my achy tummy keeps me from indulging. I recently found out that milk chocolate has the same effect. At least that got me to stop eating all the chocolate in the office! I can't even eat yogurt anymore without a small reaction ;-(

I think if you don't have a problem with dairy -- then eat it/drink it. Many people in the bodybuilding community has shunned dairy for a long time -- claiming it makes them look smooth rather than ripped. It could be because of water retention, I suppose (that makes sense for me anyway). But if you don't have a problem with it...then, by all means, have your dairy!!! Wish I could. I love dairy products...unfortunately, they don't love me!

I'm with Donna: 3 glasses of skim milk/day and at LEAST one 6-8oz carton of no-fat yogurt. I love dairy and besides the calcium we all need, it has protein and the milk has Vit D. And ice cream. . .well, what more can I say;-)

Solara is right, people who are cutting up or on pre contest diets for bodybuilding competitions do not eat dairy. The reason being it holds water in your body and every ounce counts on stage. Since pre contest diets range from 3-4 months this is an acceptable time to go without. But then I would resume if I were you. Back when I competed in the 90's all this information on how great dairy was for you was not found yet therefore I avoided it pretty much most of the time. In the past few years that it been touted as a great food for health and weight loss I have resumed eating it, I've always loved cottage cheese and yogurts so I am very happy and I can substitute these instead of chicken (4-5 times a day......borrrinnggg!)!

Another vegan here.
IMO, milk is for baby cows (or baby goats, or whatever). Its sole purphose is to aid babies to grow at a time when they need to grow quickly. Humans are the only species that drinks milk in adulthood. And most every glass of milk has the blood of a veal calf in it (metaphorically speaking).

I get calcium from enriched soymilk, some calcium powder, calcium in veggie caps (vegan "gelatin" capsules), or a calcium chew (from veganessentials.com ). I like to vary my calcium sources, since some come with more vitamin D, some with boron, some with magnesium.

Anecdotally, I know quite a few people (me included) who had bad allergies, and whose allergies improved when they gave up dairy. My theory is that the body can take a certain amount of irritation without reacting, and milk products just take many people over the edge. For every person who has very overt allergic reactions to dairy, there are probably many more who are sensitive, but that sensitivity shows up in less direct ways (like being more allergic to other things).. Just a theory based on some experience.

That just made my decision NOT to sign up with her very easy! I love dairy products , use skim milk all the time, cottage cheese etc, It is my main sources of protein..

I've always eaten dairy and am gratified to read all the recent studies suggesting that dietary calcium aids in fat burning. I usually have soy milk instead of cow's milk (just a personal preference)and I'm not much of a cheese fan except for Parmesan, but I love plain yogurt and cottage cheese.

The reason MsFit doesn't like dairy in a diet is because it's processed. Thus keeping to the rule that any food that is processed does not qualify as clean. Plain and simple, take it or leave it :)
