I wear an insulin pump, of course, and so I'm connected to it 24 hours a day and I run into problems if I'm disconnected for more than an hour. I could completely disconnect for a day, but that would mean taking several mini-shots all day long. Doable, but I didn't want to. And my pump is of course not waterproof, and I need access to its buttons all day long, so I wore a bikini instead of a one-piece so I can clip it to my bikini bottom. So on Tuesday we had a pool day, where we sat at the pool all day long. Lovely!!! I had on a black-ish bikini and then my pump was attached to my abdomen with a big white patch of tape. (Detailed, but just imagine a 1.5 inch square of white tape on someone's upper abs, to the side, like 5" under a boob.) I felt SO SELF-CONSCIOUS!!! And I'm never self conscious of my pump. Ever. But on Tuesday, I really was!!! I was trying to give myself credit for battling my diabetes for 18 years and my greatest complication to date is a higher body fat than I'd like. But I spent Tuesday morning just trying to give myself some space and recognize the fact that diabetes is a major medical thing. So I'm lying around that day, drinking water and Mai-Tais (yum!!!) and just lazing about and loving it. I got up to go to the bathroom, which was a loong way away. (I had to wind around the 4 pools and 670 pool chairs.) On my way there, a man stopped me and said "excuse me". I thought, what is this?! Do I look like a drink server?! And then he continued on, "I'm diabetic and I'm curious about that". He wanted to know all about my pump, and how to get one, and why I wear one, and what I like about it, etc!!!!! I'm tearing up just remembering it. I stopped by on my way back and thanked him. He was so surprised he made my day just by asking me about my pump, but I was so glad he asked I didn't want him to feel badly in any way about asking me.
Needless to say, I didn't give my pump (or wearing it poolside) a second thought again.
So this is the kind of story I have... we didn't go many places, and didn't see many things, but even by sitting by the pool for a day, it feels like my life changed a little. :)
